Career
Joni Pitkänen started his career in the Finnish SM-liiga at Kärpät Oulu . From the 2003/04 season , Pitkänen prevented goals from the NHL club Philadelphia Flyers , which made him the fourth player in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in the first round. After a good first season, Pitkänen went to the Flyers' farm team , the Philadelphia Phantoms in the American Hockey League , with whom he won the Calder Cup during the failed 2004/05 NHL season . After the resumption of play in the NHL, Pitkänen went back to the Flyers in 2005 and became the best scorer among the Flyers' defenders with 46 points in 58 games.
On July 14, 2006 Pitkänen extended his contract with the Flyers early.
On July 1, 2007, the Finnish defender was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers along with Geoff Sanderson and a third-round draft in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft against Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul . On July 20, 2007, he signed a one-year contract.
On July 1, 2008, Joni Pitkänen was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes as a replacement for Erik Cole , where he signed a contract worth twelve million US dollars a day later.
In April 2013, Pitkänen suffered a fracture of the heel bone in a duel for a touch icing and was out for the entire 2013/14 season. After he had not played a competitive game in the 2014/15 season either, he returned to Kärpät Oulu for three games in February 2016, but subsequently ended his active career due to persistent complaints.
