The 2003/04 season was the 87th season of the National Hockey League . 30 teams played 82 games each. The Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup after a 4-3 success in the final series against the Calgary Flames . The “Bolts” were the first expansion team in the 1990s to bring the Lord Stanley's Cup to the southern United States.
The peak of the season took place on November 22, 2003. In front of more than 55,000 spectators in the sold-out Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton (an NHL attendance record ), the Montréal Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers in the so-called Heritage Classic , played in the open air, 4: 3.
