Central Division (NHL)
The Central Division is a division of the North American ice hockey league NHL belonging to the Western Conference . It comprises seven teams, one less than its counterpart within the Western Conference, the Pacific Division .
The division into divisions is based on the geographical location of the teams. The teams that are based in the interior of North America play in the Central Division . It was founded after the league's expansion in 1993 as the successor to the Norris division . As part of the restructuring at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , the Northwest Division was dissolved and their teams were divided between the Central and Pacific Divisions .
