The 1995/96 NHL season was the 79th season in the National Hockey League . 26 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Colorado Avalanche after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Florida Panthers . The German defender Uwe Krupp scored the winning goal for Colorado in the third extension of the fourth and final game of the series. He became the first German player to win the Stanley Cup. The same success came 15 years later Dennis Seidenberg , who followed him up with the Boston Bruins in the 2010/11 season .

It was the first season ever for the Colorado Avalanche, which had previously played under the name Québec Nordiques in Québec , Canada . At the same time, it was the final season for the Winnipeg Jets , which then relocated to Phoenix , Arizona and were renamed Phoenix Coyotes . Canada, the motherland of ice hockey, lost two NHL teams within a year.

The Detroit Red Wings achieved an NHL record with 131 points (62 wins, 13 losses, 7 draws) in the regular season, but were eliminated in the play-off semifinals against eventual cup winners Colorado.
