Petr Sýkora ( IPA : [ ˈpɛtr̩ ˈsiːkora ]; born November 19, 1976 in Plzeň , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played 1156 games for the New Jersey Devils , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim during his active career between 1992 and 2013 , New York Rangers , Edmonton Oilers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Sýkora celebrated numerous successes during this period, including the two-time world championship triumphs in 1999 and 2005 with the Czech national team and winning the Stanley Cup in 2000 with the New Jersey Devils and 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Career

The center began his career with HC Plzeň in the 1st division of Czechoslovakia or after their division in the Czech extra league , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft as 18th in the first round by the New Jersey Devils .

Initially, the left shooter played for various Devils farm teams in the IHL and AHL , but in his first NHL season in 1995/96 he made the leap into the regular squad of the team from East Rutherford . In the 1999/00 season Sýkora won the Stanley Cup with the Devils , a year later he failed with New Jersey in the final at the Colorado Avalanche , but not without a new personal career record of 35 goals, 46 assists and 81 points in the regular season.

In 2002 Petr Sýkora was finally transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in exchange for Jeff Friesen and Oleg Twerdowski , with whom he again reached the Stanley Cup final in 2003 , but this time he lost to his former teammates from New Jersey with 3: 4 wins . In the fourth longest play-off game in NHL history on April 24, 2003, Sýkora had previously scored the decisive overtime goal in the Conference semi-finals against the Dallas Stars in the fifth extension .

During the NHL lockout in 2004/05 played Sykora for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League , while the first NHL season after this lockout, the Mighty Ducks separated from the Czechs, who then on 9 January 2006 in exchange for Maxim Kondratiev to the New York Rangers switched.

On July 7, 2006, the Rangers announced that Sýkora would not be in the squad for the 2006/07 season , whereupon he signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on August 11 . After an unsuccessful season with Edmonton, he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the summer of 2007 . After winning the Stanley Cup with the Pens, his contract was not renewed. Therefore, he was invited to the Minnesota Wild training camp on September 14, 2009 and received a contract three days later. After his contract expired, he was initially without a club before Sýkora signed a contract for a month with HC Plzeň in 1929 in October 2010 . In mid-November of the same year he was signed by HK Dinamo Minsk from the Continental Hockey League . For Dinamo he completed 35 KHL games in which he scored 17 points. At the end of the season he received no new contract with Dinamo, so he returned to his hometown club.

For HC Plzeň in 1929, he initially played four games in the 2011 European Trophy before receiving an invitation to the New Jersey Devils training camp in September. They finally signed him for a year at the beginning of October. In January 2013 Sýkora received a contract with SC Bern until the end of the season . Then he ended his career.
