The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2000 began on April 12, 2000 and ended on June 10, 2000 with the New Jersey Devils' 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars . For the Devils, in Scott Stevens to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning MVP of the playoffs presented, it was the second-final after 1995, the second title. The losing stars were also in the final for the second time, after winning the Stanley Cup only last year, and had the top scorer of the post-season in their ranks in the person of Brett Hull . Thus, for the first time since the New York Islanders in 1984, a reigning Stanley Cup winner lost the final; the New Jersey Devils would do the same against the Colorado Avalanche the following year . Furthermore, the final victory meant the inclusion of the Russians Alexander Mogilny and Vladimir Malachow in the Triple Gold Club .

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner New Jersey Devils traditionally had a total of 52 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among these were the assistant coaches Bobby Carpenter and John MacLean , who had already won the Stanley Cup as players with the Devils in 1995. Another assistant coach was Vyacheslav Fetissov , who won his two Stanley Cups as a player only after his time with the Devils in Detroit. Among the scouts was Marcel Pronovost , whose name was engraved on the cup for the seventh time. After five successes as a player, this was the second as a scout. Vladimir Bure, Pawel's father , also managed as a fitness advisor what his son failed to do as a player. The masseur Jürgen Merz was also a German among the people mentioned. For the players, the rule was that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. Steve Kelly , Steve Brulé and Ken Sutton benefited from this , while Deron Quint , who did not want to keep fit on the farm team, was not taken into account.

The 25 players in New Jersey are made up of two goalkeepers, eight defenders and 15 attackers, including eight Europeans . For Claude Lemieux , who had already been in the successful Devils squad in 1995 and who meanwhile played for the Colorado Avalanche , it was already the fourth Stanley Cup victory. Krzysztof Oliwa , who was not used in the playoffs, was the first Pole to win the cup.
