The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1991 began on 3 April 1991 and ended on 25 May 1991 with a 4: 2 victory of the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Minnesota North Stars . The Penguins won their first Stanley Cup when they entered the finals, which they defended the following year. In addition, they put in their captain Mario Lemieux the top scorer as well as with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. The defeated Minnesota North Stars, however, played their second Stanley Cup final in franchise history after 1981 ; they had lost this to the New York Islanders . At the same time, the last final took place in 1981 with the participation of two US teams.

With a total of 92 disputed games, the playoffs set a new NHL record in 1991, which was only exceeded with 93 games in 2014 . Furthermore, for the first time since 1973 no series was decided with a sweep .

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh Penguins traditionally had a total of 41 people, including 27 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Coach Bob Johnson was only the second American-born coach to coach a Stanley Cup winner. Only Bill Stewart had succeeded in doing this in 1938 . The officials also included assistant coaches Rick Kehoe and Barry Smith, and Scotty Bowman as the sports director. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. Jay Caufield was only in 23 games in the Penguins squad and was still considered.

Pittsburgh's 27 players consist of three goalkeepers, nine defenders and 15 attackers. There were three Europeans in the Penguins' squad .
