Zarley Bennett Zalapski (born April 22, 1968 in Edmonton , Alberta , † December 12, 2017 in Calgary , Alberta) was a Swiss - Canadian ice hockey player who played 685 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , among others, between 1984 and 2010 . Hartford Whalers , Calgary Flames , Canadiens de Montréal and Philadelphia Flyers played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
Zalapski played for the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League between 1984 and 1986 during his junior years . Thanks to good performance, he was from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft in 1986 drafted in the first round in fourth place. Then the defender was recruited by the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada and prepared over two years for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . There he finished fourth with the team, which he had also achieved at the 1987 World Cup .
At the end of the 1987/88 season, the Penguins brought Zalapski into the National Hockey League . After playing only 15 games in the NHL, it was only the following season that was his rookie season . He played a convincing round and was chosen together with Brian Leetch in the defense of the NHL All-Rookie Team . The attacking strong Zalapski became one of the best defenders in the league. In March 1991 he joined the Hartford Whalers with John Cullen and Jeff Parker . In return, Ron Francis , Grant Jennings and Ulf Samuelsson came to the Penguins.
Instead of winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh , he played for the Whalers from then on. There he managed as a defender to reach over 50 points scorer twice in a row . He stayed in Hartford for almost three years, but shortly before the end of the 1993/94 season he was given to the Calgary Flames together with James Patrick and Michael Nylander for Gary Suter , Paul Ranheim and Ted Drury . In Calgary he was no longer as successful as in previous years. He missed most of the 1996/97 season due to a knee injury. Recovered, the following season went on to the Canadiens de Montréal in February . There Valeri Bure was part of the barter business that moved to Calgary for Zalapski. The time in Montreal was not successful and so it attracted Zalapski the 1998/99 season to Europe, where he worked in the Swiss National League A for the ZSC Lions aground.
For the 1999/2000 season he followed an offer from the New York Rangers back to the NHL, but did not make the jump to the team. Instead, he played in the International Hockey League for the Long Beach Ice Dogs and the Utah Grizzlies . He made his NHL comeback during the season with twelve games for the Philadelphia Flyers . After starting the following season in the IHL with the Houston Eros , he moved to the Munich Barons in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) during the 2000/01 season . The following season he spent in Merano , Italy , before he spent the 2002/03 season for IF Björklöven in the Swedish Allsvenskan , the second division, and Esbjerg IK in Denmark. After a one-year break and returning to North America to join the Kalamazoo Wings in the United Hockey League , he returned to Switzerland. Thanks to his marriage to a Swiss woman, he had received a Swiss passport and from then on no longer burdened the quota of foreigners.
In the 2005/06 season he played with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers , HC Martigny and EHC Visp and HC Innsbruck in Austria. At the end of last season he initially resigned as an active ice hockey player. But after the summer break, he decided to continue his career and kept fit at EHC Olten and EHC Chur before he was signed by EHC Biel for the following season in early September 2007 . For the 2009/10 season he was signed by the Lausanne Hockey Club . After a season with the Lausanne team, Zalapski announced his retirement.
He died on December 12, 2017 of complications from a viral infection at the age of 49 in Calgary, Canada.
