mode

In the basic round, after a double round trip back and forth, the points achieved up to then were halved (point sharing ), after which another double round trip was played. There were two points for a win in regular time. If there was a tie after sixty minutes, a 5-minute overtime was played. If there was no winner after that either, this was determined in a penalty shootout. The winner then received two points, the defeated opponent one point. The best four clubs qualify for the semi-finals, which, like the subsequent final, were held in best of seven mode.

Time schedule

  • Basic round: September 23, 2005 to March 3, 2006
  • Semi-finals ( best of seven ): March 5 to March 19, 2006
  • Final (Best of Seven): March 21 to April 4, 2006

Basic round

The first half of the basic round was dominated by EC VSV and HC Innsbruck. The Villachers had initially placed themselves at the top with four wins at the start, but after the first round they were replaced by the Innsbruckers, who had meanwhile been able to gain a lead of five points on second place. Conversely, the EC KAC initially brought up the rear, as the first six games were lost. It was only gradually that some victories followed, while the 99ers, plagued by bad luck with injuries, fell back more and more and finally came in last place in the course of an eight-game series of defeats. The other teams stayed close to each other in midfield and maintained close contact with the leading group.

With the division of points, the field narrowed back to nine points, but the trends continued. While the Innsbruckers collapsed in their performances in December and were replaced by the Salzburgers at the top of the table, the VSV also had to struggle with a small interim low, which created a little gap to the top. The performance of the Villachers stabilized quickly, so that towards the end of the main round Villach and Salzburg dueled with a clear gap for first place, which finally went to Salzburg with two points difference.

In midfield the tide turned as the championship progressed. The EC KAC had stabilized a little in the meantime and fought their way back to the playoff ranks in the table together with the Capitals, who had fallen far behind after a dubious game with only one win out of seven games. In the last few rounds a fight between four teams became apparent: Vienna, Klagenfurt, Linz and Innsbruck were ultimately very close to each other, as the latter two had got into trouble with some unnecessary defeats. The Capitals were able to win their last two games and save themselves to fourth. With equal points, Innsbruck took third place after a home win against Salzburg in the last game. The parallel game between the KAC and Linz, both of which had hoped for help from Salzburg, went to the KAC, but subsequently remained of no value in the fight for the playoff places.

Salzburg was the only team to have a positive record against all opponents. The exact opposite was the Graz 99ers, who had not succeeded in this with any other team. The Graz team also struggled with an impossible deficit for the entire second half of the regular season and never found their form despite two coach changes. Injuries did the rest. Only nine out of 28 games in the second half of the championship could be won, with serious discussions after the season about whether the 99ers would compete in the Bundesliga again.

Special events during the regular round

The last game of the basic round between the EC VSV and the Vienna Capitals drew a lot of discussions
  • In the penultimate round there was a special curiosity: the game Vienna Capitals against EC VSV went to the penalty shootout - but when the score was 2: 1 for the Viennese, the wrong Villacher started (probably the linesman had noted the wrong shooters), which is why he The referee canceled the hit and declared the Viennese the winner. Since there are no clear regulations for this case, and the situation was aggravated by the fact that at this point in time four clubs (including the Capitals) were still playing for the remaining two play-off places, there were strong protests from the other clubs. The VSV was already firmly qualified for the playoff at this point. The association decided to re-host the entire penalty shootout. Against this decision, the Viennese obtained an injunction before a civil court , on the basis of which the Villachers, who were already on their way to Vienna, had to turn back. After a renewed examination by the association, it was decided to continue the penalty shootout when the score was 2: 1 for Vienna, in the order originally specified. This was played on March 2nd in front of about 1500 spectators in the Albert-Schultz-Halle . Günther Lanzinger competed against the Viennese goalkeeper Jürgen Penker and missed the penalty, whereby the Capitals were finally declared the winner and fixed the entry into the play-offs with the additional point.
  • In the course of the season, three of the seven teams changed coach: the EC KAC dismissed the Swede Mats Waltin and hired Kevin Primeau in his place. In November, the Graz 99ers signed Bill Stewart instead of Mike Zettel, and shortly before the end of the basic round, the Blackwings Linz, with their coach Kurt Harand, took the only Austrian Bundesliga coach on leave . Mike Zettel, who was dismissed by the Grazers, was signed up, but he could no longer help the Linzers to a playoff place. For the next season, the Linz team signed Bill Stewart, which created the curious situation that Mike Zettel was replaced by Bill Stewart twice in one season.
  • KAC goalkeeper Andrew Verner achieved something special in the game against HC Innsbruck on January 27, 2006: he scored the goal to make it 4-2 in the 60th minute after Innsbruck's goalkeeper Claus Dalpiaz had taken off the ice.
  • The Red Bulls Salzburg made the most sensational transfer of the year when they signed the Latvian goalkeeper Artūrs Irbe , who replaced Björn Bjurling from Sweden in December.
  • In December, the game between Graz 99ers and Red Bulls Salzburg had to be verified 5-0 in favor of Salzburg because the Graz team were unable to play due to more than 10 injured players and Salzburg were not prepared to postpone it.
  • In the history of the Carinthian ice hockey derby , there was a perfect season for a team for the first time since the 1979/80 season , back then for EC KAC : the later champions EC VSV were able to play all eight matches with local rivals EC KAC in the basic round for decide, even if the last four games only found their winner in the penalty shootout. These eight games were part of a 17-game series that remains a record in derby history to this day.

Series EC Red Bull Salzburg - Vienna Capitals

In retrospect, the EC Red Bull Salzburg series against Vienna Capitals was the prelude to a dubious game for the Viennese that would drag on over the next four years and mean the semi-final out against Salzburg every year. In the first game, Salzburg took the lead in the series with an undisputed 6-1 home win. In the second game, the Viennese ran after a narrow deficit until the final section, but were able to achieve the redeeming 2-2 in the 48th minute. However, Salzburg immediately took the lead again and finally brought the narrow lead over time.

The third game ended 6: 3 for Red Bulls Salzburg, but was penalized because the Salzburgers made a formal error when they switched legionnaires from Darby Hendrickson to Patrick Thoresen and the Norwegian would not have been eligible to play. This decision, which once again left no hope in the Capitals for a short time, was canceled in the following game. After the game had been very close until the end of the second period, although Salzburg was still in the lead with one goal, two quick goals at the beginning of the final third decided the fourth game in favor of the Bulls.

In the decisive game Salzburg, the home side pulled away 4-0 in the first forty minutes. The Viennese were only able to correct the result with a goal from Oliver Setzinger and were eliminated from the series with 1: 4, but without a real win.

Series EC VSV - HC Innsbruck

The second semifinal series between EC VSV and HC Innsbruck was much tighter. The Villachers succeeded in the first round a safe victory on their own ice, but the Innsbruckers were able to equalize in the series in a hard-fought game with alternating goals and a total of 100 penalty minutes. The third encounter brought the Innsbruckers an early lead, which was quickly equalized by the VSV and finally turned into a clear 4-1 home win. Game four turned into a disaster for Innsbruck. After Villach had taken the lead after just two minutes and fifteen seconds and was able to extend it, the next goal succeeded in the meantime, but the very undisciplined Tyroleans weakened themselves with many penalties and finally had to accept a significant defeat on their own ice, with which they Series seemed to have been decided early on.

The Innsbruck team unexpectedly found their way back into the series and were able to keep up with the series with an away win in Villach, which could only be fixed in overtime. In an extremely close home game, in which the decisive goal came only three minutes before the end of the game, the Haie finally forced a seventh game in the series. In this, however, the EC VSV showed itself in impressive form and pulled away to 4: 2 at the beginning of the middle third. When the 5: 2 fell in the final third instead of the following goal, the game was decided, although Innsbruck was able to correct the result a little.

Individual results final

An exciting fight for the championship title developed between the two front runners in the main round. In the very first game, the EC VSV conquered the home advantage with a narrow 3-2 away win, in which the decisive goal came only eight minutes before the end. As a result, the EC VSV made it 2-0 in the series, when the team pulled away to 3-0 in the following home game before the Salzburg team scored their first goal, which was ultimately cosmetic. However, Salzburg found their way back into the series with ease when the Latvian goalkeeper Artūrs Irbe blocked all twenty shots fired by the Villachers and helped his team to a sovereign 3-0 victory. The following game in Villach also went to Salzburg, which initially moved away with a double strike to 2-0, but which Villach also equalized with a double strike in the first third. After the lead in the meantime, Salzburg equalized with two more goals in the series.

The fifth game in the series was the key to Villach's title win, when the team was able to secure the match puck with a 6-2 win on foreign ice with virtually no risk. The sixth and decisive game then turned into a nerve-wracking thriller. After Salzburg had scored the first goal after only 59 seconds, Villach turned the score in the eighteenth minute with a double strike. Salzburg equalized in the second period, after which both teams acted extremely defensively. Without further goals, the game finally went into overtime. This went without penalties except for a double exclusion, but with many opportunities on both sides, which could be defused by the outstanding goalkeepers. It was only in the 78th minute that Dany Bousquet, the top scorer of the league, scored the decisive goal and so scored the EC VSV to his sixth championship title.
