Thomas Raffl (born June 19, 1986 in Villach ) is an Austrian ice hockey striker who has been under contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian ice hockey league since July 2016 . His brother Michael and his cousin Alexander Rauchwald are also professional ice hockey players; his uncle Gerald Rauchwald was also a long-time VSV player and multiple Austrian international.

Career

Club career

Thomas Raffl is the son of the former VSV player Peter Raffl . So he came to the EC VSV as a teenager . After playing 76 Bundesliga games at the age of 19, he was drafted as the 69th player in the 2005 CHL Import Draft by the Kelowna Rockets . He then ventured overseas, where he could not prevail in the Western Hockey League but neither with the Rockets nor with the Swift Current Broncos . Raffl blames the lack of time to get used to it, as he only moved to America in the fall. So he returned to Villach during the season.

After Raffl had been nominated for the KELLY'S All-Star-Game of the ÖEHL last year , he became a key player for the VSV in the 2008/09 season - he scored 35 points in 41 games. His achievements enabled him to move to Sweden, where he signed a two-year contract with the Elitserien team Luleå HF . At the start of the 2009/10 season he was unable to work for several weeks due to a severe concussion. After his recovery, he completed 45 games for his new team, scoring seven goals and eight assists. In November 2010, he signed a contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg after starting the season in Luleå.

In early October 2015, Raffl received a one-year contract worth $ 575,000 for the 2015/16 season with the NHL franchise Winnipeg Jets , although he was only used with the Manitoba Moose farm team . Several injuries prevented a climb to the jets. After 31 appearances for Manitoba, in which he posted five goals and five assists, Raffl suffered a back injury in mid-March 2016 and had to end the season prematurely. Raffl then returned to Austria after just one year and rejoined the EC Red Bull Salzburg.

National team career

Raffl played for the first time in the senior national team on February 7, 2008 in a 3-2 win against Italy in Sanok, Poland . That same year he was also at the World Championship Division I there. With three points in five games, he played a key role in Austria's promotion back to the top division. Also in 2010 , 2012 and 2017 , when he was elected to the All-Star-Team as well as the most valuable player of the tournament , he took part in the tournaments of Division I, where he was also promoted to the top division. In the top division, however, he played at the 2011 and 2015 World Championships , when the Alpine countries had to accept relegation. He also represented his colors in the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics and the Games in Sochi itself.

Raffl also completed two U20 ( 2005 and 2006 ) and one U18 world championships ( 2004 ) in Division I for Austria.
