The EC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian ice hockey team from Salzburg ( state Salzburg ) that plays in the Erste Bank ice hockey league .
history
EC Salzburg was founded in 1995 through the merger of the two small clubs EC Morzg and EC Tiefenbach. The EC Morzg in turn was created after the bankruptcy of the Salzburg EC in 1988 as a catchment basin for its youth players. Shortly after it was founded, the Kaindl company was presented as the first main sponsor and the club name was changed to EC Kaindl Salzburg . From the entry of the beverage manufacturer Red Bull in 2000, the official club name was EC The Red Bulls Salzburg . 2007 took place in the sense of a uniform corporate identity with the since 2005 by the Red Bull GmbH. led soccer club FC Red Bull Salzburg was renamed EC Red Bull Salzburg .
Promotion to the Bundesliga
After winning the National League championship in 2004, the Red Bulls have been playing in Austria's highest ice hockey league, the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL), since the 2004/05 season . A farm team has been playing in the national league since this season . For the first season in the top Austrian league, many new players were signed to make the squad competitive. Some came from competing Bundesliga clubs , such as defender Jaako Niskavaara and striker Matti Kaipainen from EC KAC or cousins Marco and Martin Pewal from EC VSV . In addition, one tried to upgrade the cadre with experienced legionaries. Thus came Greger Artursson the Swedish first division club Färjestad BK Team, and Rob Tallas one was NHL brought -erfahrener goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, the start of the season failed. Salzburg started with eight defeats in a row and only managed to score fully in their ninth game away against Vienna Capitals for the first time. But even after that, the team's performance did not stabilize. Rob Tallas, who had to leave the club after only twelve missions with the miserable catch rate of 86.22% and then ended his career , also fell into the crossfire of criticism . Jürgen Penker took over for him when it had long been foreseeable that no more than last place was to be expected this season. And that's how it happened: the first season in the Bundesliga ended in seventh place with only twelve games won (out of 48 games).
On the way to the championship team
No stone was left unturned during the summer break. The budget was increased significantly and with Dieter Kalt , André Lakos and Matthias Trattnig some of the best Austrian players were directed to the Salzach. With Bjorn Bjurling an experienced Legionnaires for the position of goalkeeper was again obliged. This time the season got off to a good start. The team established itself right from the start in the front half of the table and even took the lead over long distances after sharing the points. The only drawback was again a poor goalkeeping performance. Bjurling was sacked halfway through the regular season and replaced by the Latvian national team goalie Artūrs Irbe . With him, Salzburg began to dominate the championship and remained without a point in only six of 24 games in the second half of the regular season. Only the EC VSV was able to keep up with the people of Mozartstadt, but in the end remained two points behind in second place. Third place, the Innsbrucker Haie , were even nine points behind Salzburg.
As a result, the cops marched through the semi-finals, in which they faced the Vienna Capitals in a best-of-seven series . The team only lost one game, but it was on the green table. The third game (a 6-3 home win for the Bulls) was subsequently penalized in favor of the Viennese, as Salzburg had deployed Patrick Thoresen, an unregistered legionnaire. As expected, they faced the EC VSV in the final, but lost the opening game on their own ice with 2: 3. The second game was also lost with 1: 4, before you could finally write in the third game with a smooth 3: 0 victory. In the fourth match they even managed to equalize in the series with a narrow away win, but Villach immediately responded with a 6-2 win on Salzburg's ice. The next game in Villach was now under the sign "All or nothing" and developed into a thriller. A quick goal from Martin Ulrich after only 59 seconds was followed by a double strike from Villach towards the end of the first period. Frank Banham leveled just before half-time, but the last thirty seconds of regular time were goalless. It went into an overtime, where Dany Bousquet fixed the championship title of Villach in the 78th minute.
For the 2006/07 season the squad was reinforced again. Thomas Koch joined the team, and with Reinhard Divis came one of the best Austrian goalkeepers who had just turned his back on North American hockey. This time it got off to an even better start. Salzburg only alternated until half-time with Villach at the top of the table. While the away team was still weak in the beginning, an amazing winning streak developed at the team's home games. In twenty-eight games on their own ice, Salzburg only left the ice as a loser , in round 44 against the Vienna Capitals . It was precisely this consistency that meant that they finally dominated the top of the table alone and finally won the basic round with an eight point lead over the EC VSV. In the semifinals, the team then sweeps the Capitals 3-0 wins and finally stood again against the EC VSV in the final. After a smooth 2-0 win in the first game, the second clash got a little out of hand. Many penalties paralyzed the flow of the game, and after sixty minutes it was a draw with 3: 3 goals. In the penalty shootout (at that time an endless overtime was only played in decisive playoff games), the Villachers finally had the better end for themselves and equalized. In the third match everything went again for Salzburg with a 6: 3 win. After the team had also won 3-0 away, the Villachers could not oppose the Mozartstädter in game five. With an undisputed 4-2 home win, the team brought the first Bundesliga championship title to Salzburg.
Mission title defense
The most important change for the following season was made in the dugout: Hardy Nilsson was appointed sports director, while Pierre Pagé now acted as coach. Almost as usual, the team started the new season successfully and was able to hold their own in the top half of the table, even though Salzburg didn't seem as confident as in the previous year. Pierre Pagé's changed system took some time to take effect, so this time the basic round was only finished in third place. In the placement round, the team lost five out of ten games and even slipped to fourth place. In the quarter-finals, the team met the EC VSV, which is the first time in three years that the two teams have not met. Despite a high 2: 8 defeat in the fourth encounter in five games, Salzburg narrowly prevailed against the runner-up and met the Capitals again in the semi-finals, who were swept 4-0 wins (which Salzburg did not have in three years Playoff game against the capitals on the ice). In the final they met the newly added HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , who had fought his way out of the table cellar to the final, a little unexpectedly . The first game of the series went 3-2 after a penalty shootout to the Laibacher, but Salzburg regained their home advantage with a 3-1 away win. However, the Slovenes were able to present again and won on Salzburg ice 4: 3 after extra time. After this game, however, some suspensions were issued against players from Ljubljana. In the fourth game, the Slovenian team still used players worth the full number of points, although the value of the suspended players should have been deducted. Laibach narrowly won the game, but only found out hours before the fifth match that the criminal panel had verified the game 5-0 in favor of Salzburg. Laibach then lost this fifth encounter with 0: 5 and was now confronted with seeing a 3: 1 lead transformed into a 2: 3 deficit within a few hours. At the all-important game in Ljubljana, the fans from Ljubljana reacted with displeasure, so that the game had to be interrupted several times. In the end, Salzburg narrowly prevailed 3-2 and thus defended the title.
Only runner-up
For the 2008/09 season , the team was finally completely rebuilt. Pierre Pagé replaced many of the experienced legionnaires with young foreign players who wanted to prove themselves for the first time in Europe and thus further rejuvenated the team. As a result, the team shuttled back and forth between second and sixth place in the table at the start of the championship and did not find the consistency of past years. On November 16, 2008, during the away game against the Hungarian team Alba Volán Székesfehérvár , there were several tangible scenes that resulted in player bans on both sides. With Dieter Kalt one of the leading players left the team in January 2009 and moved to Sweden. The team's performance did not stabilize until the end of the regular season, when they could make up ground and finally fight their way to third place in the table. In the quarter-finals, the Bulls prevailed confidently against the ailing HK Jesenice and again took the Vienna Capitals out of the running in the semifinals (although this time the second game in the series was lost). In the final, they met the EC KAC , who had dominated the championship in the basic round. The first game of the final series on Klagenfurt's ice was only just lost 4: 5 after extra time. However, games two and three then turned the series. With a 7: 2 home win and a subsequent 6: 3 away win, two sovereign victories were recorded and the home advantage brought to the city of Mozart. However, the fourth encounter was decided by the EC KAC with a 4-1 away win and was then able to turn the series back in its favor with a sovereign 3-0 on home ice. The first match ball game turned into a thriller when the EC KAC led until 68 seconds before the end of the game. Darryl Bootland secured the equalizer in the series for Salzburg with the equalization and the winning goal in extra time. Game seven in Klagenfurt, however, was lost very close with 1: 2, which means that after two championship titles, the title was not defended again this time.
The year of the title
The 2009/10 season was the most successful so far in the club's history. Head coach and sports director Pierre Pagé continued on his path with the Red Bulls in his third year, and in the end the Salzburg ice hockey club was happy about three titles. In September 2009, the Red Bulls won their own invitation tournament Red Bulls Salute for the first time in their five-year history, leaving well-known European top teams such as CSKA Moscow behind them. In November 2009 and January 2010 respectively, Salzburg made their third attempt in the Continental Cup, the highest European IIHF club competition this season, and after two successful rounds in Latvia and France they also won the trophy. With the victory in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the Red Bulls finally made the triple and celebrated the most successful season in the tenth year of their existence. The MVP of 2009 Thomas Koch lifted the trophy for the first time as captain. The youth work in the Red Bull Hockey Model was further accelerated, which u. a. reflected in the championship titles of the under 20 and under 17 year olds. The Red Bulls farm team was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Austrian National League against eventual champions Dornbirn, but again offered many young talents the ideal platform to develop themselves. Record-breaking: On January 12, 2010, the Red Bulls played in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga against Jesenice with an average age of just 21.1 years. A total of 47 Salzburg players recorded at least one appearance in Austria's top division. In the 2010/11 season the title could be successfully defended. In the final they successfully prevailed against EC KAC with 4: 3.
3 years without an EBEL title
In the quarter-finals of the 2011/12 season they were eliminated against EC KAC after losing the 6th final game 5: 2 and thus the Best of Seven series with 2: 4. In the 2012/13 season you couldn't get to the final again. In the semifinals, the Vienna Capitals had to be defeated 2: 4 in the Best of Seven series. The Red Bulls won their fifth Austrian championship title in the 2013/14 season . After the basic round, the team took third place, but was able to finish the placement round first. With successes over the Dornbirner EC (4–2 wins) and the EHC Linz (3–0 wins), Salzburg reached the playoff final against the Italian newcomer HC Bozen , the first non-Austrian club since the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana 2008 to reach the final reached the league. While Red Bull won against the team from Slovenia at that time, the South Tyroleans were the first foreign team to secure victory in the Austrian ice hockey league with a 3-2 after extra time in the decisive fifth game . The Austrian championship went - as a consolation prize, so to speak - to the team from Salzburg as the best local team.
New era of coaches
In the summer of 2014, the trainer Don Jackson left the club to train EHC Red Bull Munich . Dan Ratushny was brought in to replace it . With the change of coach, some players were also changed. Ryan Duncan and John Hughes came back to the club. Ben Walter , Kyle Beach , Brett Sterling and Zdeněk Kutlák were also signed up to strengthen the team . The fresh wind in the team was immediately noticeable when the league won the first 7 games in a row. In the Champions Hockey League 2014/15 you reached the second round as a group winner. Where you had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Luleå HF . After winning the main round, you also won the intermediate round. In the playoffs they chose the VSV as their first opponent, against whom they prevailed with 4: 1 in the "Best of Seven" series. In the semifinals they met EC KAC , against whom they clearly qualified 4-0 for the final. In the final, the Vienna Capitals were eliminated 4-0 in the "Best of Seven" series. Thus you became EBEL winner for the 5th time and Austrian champion for the 6th time .
In the 2015/16 season , Salzburg won the main round and the subsequent placement round with ease. John Hughes established himself as the top scorer in the league, while Brett Sterling rose to become the second best scorer in the EBEL. For the quarter-finals of the play-offs, Salzburg decided for the eighth-placed club EC KAC , which was defeated in all four main round games, in the last meeting even 7-0. Nevertheless, Salzburg were only able to prevail in the quarter-finals after seven games 4-3 in the series and were thus in the semifinals against the EC VSV . The Bulls were able to prevail with 4: 2, although curiously all victories ended with the same final score of 2: 1. Since EHC Linz was eliminated in their semi-final match against the Czech club Orli Znojmo , Salzburg was already Austrian champion with its semi-final victory and was thus able to defend its title from the previous year. In the final against Znojmo, Salzburg won 4-2 and is again the winner of the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .
Other developments
In May 2007 the rumor was raised that the club was to be accepted into the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). Admission to the continental hockey league originating from Russia was also a possibility in 2008, but was not implemented.
Red Bulls Salute
The Red Bulls Salute was an international ice hockey invitation tournament that was organized by the EC Red Bull Salzburg from 2005 and held in the Salzburg ice arena. In the summer of 2010, the tournament was upgraded at the beginning of the season with the integration into the newly founded European Trophy and formed the final of this top-ranked ice hockey tournament.
