The championship of the Austrian Ice Hockey League 1978/79 was the EC KAC for the 19th time .

mode

The eight clubs played against each other four times in the regular season. The best four clubs qualified for the championship round consisting of two rounds, the remaining four played in the relegation group in two rounds to stay in the Bundesliga. The teams took 4, 3, 2 or 1 bonus points depending on their placement in the basic round.
