The 1965/66 season of the Austrian Ice Hockey League was the first after the restructuring of the league system and the introduction of the Bundesliga. Austrian champion was for the 9th time in the club's history and for the third time in a row the EC KAC .
In advance
Until the season 1964/65 was Austrian Championship in a single national league played the National League A was called. Among them there were several regional groups under the collective name Nationalliga B. Up to the mentioned season there were a total of eight clubs in the National League A: EC KAC , Innsbrucker Eislaufverein (IEV), Wiener Eissport-Vereinigung (WEVg), Sportverein Ehrwald (SVE), EK Zell am See (EKZ), ATSE Graz and Salzburg Ice Skating Club (SEV).
However, since the individual clubs played in very different economic and sporting classes, the Austrian Ice Hockey Association decided in a meeting on May 15, 1965 to split up the field of participants. The champions were to be played in a first class, now known as the Bundesliga , from initially only four clubs. The promotion and relegation regulation was initially retained, but later the relegation of the Bundesliga bottom was suspended in order to gradually replenish the field of participants up to eight teams.
The reason for this was the desired professionalization of the first league, as the ÖEHV realized that an improvement in the league level within the scope of the possibilities of a semi-professional organization could no longer succeed.
Bundesliga
Four teams took part in the first season of the Bundesliga: EC KAC ( Klagenfurt ), Innsbrucker EV , Wiener EVg and EC Kitzbühel . This denied a double round trip. The EC Kitzbühel and the Vienna EVg played their home games in the open air. The foreigner regulation stipulated that a team was only allowed to use as many legionnaires in a game as the respective opponent had available.
The first goal in Bundesliga history was scored by Erhart Hermann on November 13, 1965 after 4:17 minutes to make the Innsbruck EV 1-0 against the WEVg. Already early in the season it was clear that only Innsbruck and Klagenfurt would play for the final title win, with the former also falling back shortly afterwards. The first encounter between the two teams on November 30th was about to be canceled due to hardship, but ended in a draw after a gross playing time of over two and a half hours. A total of 16 (Innsbruck) and 18 (Klagenfurt) penalty minutes were pronounced.
In the end, the ninth championship title for the EC KAC was certain.
