The Austrian Ice Hockey League 2000/2001 was held with ten clubs. The championship was for the 27th time in its club history the EC KAC , which prevailed in the final against the local rival EC VSV and was thus able to successfully defend the previous year's title.

After only four teams had participated in the league in the previous year, the Bundesliga was merged with the second-highest division, the National League, in the 2000/01 season . Only the Telekom Austria team , which to a certain extent formed the farm team of the two Carinthian teams EC KAC and EC VSV, did not follow suit and was dissolved.

This measure had become necessary because the previous year’s last VEU Feldkirch had voluntarily relegated for financial reasons and was now taking part in the Oberliga , which formed the second highest division this season due to the suspension of the National League. Even the Vienna EV no longer wanted to participate in the Bundesliga, which means that without the merger of the leagues, only the two teams from Carinthia would have been left. This fact had provoked heated discussions about the financial viability of the Bundesliga, where in the previous years, driven by the VEU Feldkirch, a veritable arms race had taken place, which gradually decimated the field of participants. For the amalgamation of the two leagues and the new season, new statutes, such as a revised legionnaires regulation, had been issued in order to prevent such a development in the future.

The field of participants finally turned out as follows:

mode

The ten clubs played against each other four times in the regular season, with the points halved after the first half of the season. In the event of a tie, a 5-minute extension ( Sudden Victory Overtime ) was played with four field players each. If this ended goalless, a penalty shoot-out was decided. The winner thus determined received two points, the loser one.

A play-off was then played, with all matches being played in the best of five mode, and the final in the best of seven mode.
