Emanuel "Manny" Viveiros (born January 8, 1966 in St. Albert , Alberta ) is a former Austro - Canadian ice hockey player who played as a defender in Austria for many years . After the end of his active career in the 2006/07 season, he became a trainer and worked for his home club EC KAC and ERC Ingolstadt , among others . Most recently he was assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League until May 2019 .
Career
Viveiros began his active career with the St. Albert Saints and the Prince Albert Raiders in the 1981/82 season. Already in the 1983/84 season he was able to record 109 points (94 assists ) in 67 games in the basic round . In the NHL Entry Draft 1984 he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers and came in the 1985/86 season to first inserts for the Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League . He spent a total of three seasons in the NHL, but could not prevail there and played mostly for various teams in the minor league .
After playing in the second German ice hockey league at ESV Kaufbeuren in the 1989/90 season , he finally continued his career in Europe in 1991 and played for the Austrian club EC VSV for four seasons . After a year at EHC Lustenau , he moved to the German ice hockey league for the Schwenninger Wild Wings before returning to Austria. In the 2000/01 season he finally landed at his home club EC KAC, to which he has remained loyal to this day.
Viveiros established itself there as a great pillar of defense and distinguished itself over the years through thoughtful and effective play. After his naturalization, he also ran for the Austrian national team in the Olympic qualification and the ice hockey world championship in 2005.
When the EC KAC got into sporting turbulence in the 2005/06 season and coach Mats Waltin was dismissed, Viveiros took over the position of coach as an active player for three games before he was replaced by Kevin Primeau , who was also unable to convince. When he injured his back in the 2006/07 season and had to end his active career, he succeeded Primeau as head coach and signed a five-year contract with the EC KAC. Until the end of 2008/09 he was supported by the KAC veteran Mario Schaden as assistant coach and Gerald Ressmann as youth coach, who also supported him on the player bench (also in 2009/10).
The first 2007/08 season, which he led completely, began with setbacks, but by December he managed to form a powerful team that was the most successful team in the intermediate round (however, due to a lack of bonus points from the regular season, it finished second in the table). In the playoffs, the EC KAC was eliminated in the quarterfinals against HDD Olimpija Ljubljana .
For the 2008/09 season, Viveiros reinforced the team with some experienced DEL players and brought back the former KAC player Christoph Brandner .
In 2014 Viveiros moved to Germany at ERC Ingolstadt as Larry Huras' assistant trainer . After the runner-up title in the 2014/15 season , he was promoted to head coach of the "Panthers" on April 29, 2015. After his team got only 17 points from the first 18 games and thus finished last in the table, Viveiros was dismissed in November 2015.
In July 2016 he was hired by the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League as head coach. With the team he won the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the 2017/18 season and was himself honored with the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as the best coach in the league. The Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League then signed him in May 2018 as assistant coach to Todd McLellan . He was dismissed during the following season and Viveiros was also relieved of his duties after the end of the season in May 2019.
