Career

Mats Waltin began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Djurgårdens IF . However, the defender began his professional career at Södertälje SK , for which he was active from 1972 to 1978, initially in Division 1 and then in its successor Elitserien . In the 1975/76 season he received the gold puck as the best Swedish player. After his engagement in Södertälje he returned to Stockholm to Djurgårdens IF, with whom he was first runner-up in 1979 and Swedish champion for the first time in the 1982/83 season .

From 1984 to 1987 Waltin played first time abroad when he for the HC Lugano in the Swiss National League A aground. With this he won the national championship in 1986 and 1987 . Following these successes, he joined Lugano's league rivals EV Zug for another two years. The long-time Swedish international then returned to Sweden, where he was on the ice from 1989 to 1991 for his two ex-clubs Södertälje SK and Djurgårdens IF. With the latter he became Swedish champion for the second time in 1990. Following the 1990/91 season, he ended his active career.

From 1991 to 1998 Waltin was assistant coach at his home club Djurgårdens IF. During this time he took over the management of the Swiss club HC Davos as the successor to the Canadian Lance Nethery . Waltin was the head coach of the Davos team from 1992 to 1996, and during this time he was promoted to the top league with HC Davos. For the next three years he was promoted to head coach at Djurgårdens IF, where he shared the post with the then Swedish national coach Hardy Nilsson from 1999 to 2001 , whereby Waltin himself looked after Sweden as team manager at the 2002 World Cup. As head coach, he achieved two more championship titles with Djurgården in 2000 and 2001. He then moved to the management of the club for a season.

In the summer of 2004 he signed a contract as head coach at EC KAC from the Austrian ice hockey league , but was dismissed on October 31, 2005 at the beginning of his second season with the Klagenfurt team, although he was runner-up with his team last year. In the following years, the former two-time Olympic participant withdrew from active day-to-day business. Only for the 2008 World Cup he took over the coaching position of the Slovenian national team , which had been promoted from Division I in the previous year , but could not prevent the immediate relegation.

Since the 2010/11 season, Waltin has been the head coach at VIK Västerås HK in HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division.
