The HC Davos is a Swiss ice hockey club from Davos . The HCD is the record champion with 31 titles . The home stadium is the Davos ice rink , an architecturally unusual wooden structure .
history
The beginnings
In 1918 the first hockey club in Davos was founded by Kurt Wüst as a student and guest club. The actual Hockey Club Davos was founded in 1921 by P. Müller - a year later the club took part in the Swiss championship for the first time . With the implementation of the first tournament for the Spengler Cup , which was donated by Carl Spengler , the foundation stone for one of the most important club tournaments was laid in 1923. In 1926 HC Davos won the Swiss championship for the first time.
In 1948 HC Davos won the 20th Swiss championship, the Davos ice rink was modernized and got the first one meter high boards, which were also used at the Olympic Games in St. Moritz. In 1950 HC Davos won the Swiss championship again and one of the stars of the time, Bibi Torriani , ended his career. In the following years the HCD succeeded in winning the Spengler Cup several times.
The 50s, 60s and 70s
In the 1959/60 season, the HC Davos team succeeded in becoming Swiss champions again, although the last game had to be played in the Hallenstadion in Zurich due to lack of ice . The Davos artificial ice rink was officially opened on December 26, 1960 with the championship game Davos - Zürcher SC . The 1969/70 season must HC Davos nine years later the aisle in the National League B compete. During this season Toni Morosani was again President of the HCD and the Davos team missed promotion by one rank. HC Davos remained in National League B for several years, and in the 1978/79 season HC Davos returned to National League A with player-coach Cadieux. The following year the ice rink in Davos was roofed over and the HCD came third in the championship.
The 80s
During the 1980/81 season, the American coach Brooks had to leave and "Wädel" Dürst led the HCD to relegation, but ended his career after that year. On December 26, 1981 the inauguration of the ice rink took place with the game HC Davos (reinforced) against the Cologne EC . In 1984 HC Davos again achieved the title of Swiss Champion and repeated this success the following year. In 1986, the HCD lost the first playoff final in Swiss ice hockey history against HC Lugano . In 1987 the Davos team reached third place in the championship, in 1988 they were fourth. In these years, the departures of high performers due to a lack of finances were not replaced. In 1989 the club was relegated to the National League B for the second time.
The 90s
In 1990 HC Davos was relegated to the first division. A new beginning was initiated under the new board with Werner Kohler as president and Lance Nethery as trainer. The tournament for the Spengler Cup took place for the first time without the host HC Davos - the EHC Kloten represented the people of Graubünden. In the 1992/93 season they were promoted to the National League A. Long-time players Jacques Soguel , Daniele Paganini and Richi Bucher ended their sporting careers in 1991. In the following season, coach Mats Waltin from Sweden was committed.
In 1994/95 , the HCD reached fourth place in the qualifying round. The first play-off opponent was Friborg-Gottéron, against whom the Davos team won twice in Friborg, but lost three home games and eliminated from the play-offs. In return, the Davos team reached the final of the Spengler Cup again, which Färjestad BK won 3-0. In the following season the HCD achieved fifth place in the qualifying round and failed in the first play-off round at EV Zug . After the season, Mats Waltin left Davos, who was replaced by the new coach Arno Del Curto . He used the three foreigners Ken Yaremchuk , Valerij Schyrjajew and Sergei Petrenko in his first season with the Bündner team to reach the semi-final goal of the season.
In the 1997/98 season , the HCD finished the qualifying round in third place and after four wins against HC Lugano and another four wins against HC Friborg Gottéron in the final. In the sixth play-off game, EV Zug became Swiss champions for the first time and HC Davos runners-up. The following year, the HCD team reached sixth place in the qualifying round and failed at the first play-off opponent HC Lugano. Team Canada won the Spengler Cup against HC Davos this year. Also in 2000 the HCD managed the play-off qualification, but was eliminated in the first round after five games against the ZSC Lions.
2000s
For the 2000/01 season , HC Davos signed the goalkeepers Petter Rönnquist and Lars Weibel as well as the strikers Kevin Miller (USA), Pat Falloon and Lonny Bohonos (both from Canada ) in order to reach the play-off qualification goal of the season. This goal was achieved with a third place in the main round, but the team failed in the first round of the play-offs with 0-4 at SC Bern .
The next season started with hardly any changes in the squad, only the Czech Josef Marha and the Swiss Björn Christen and Benjamin Winkler were new to the team . In the fall, Reto von Arx and Michel Riesen , who had returned from America, joined them. After the main round (qualification), the club was in first place in the table and defeated SC Bern 4-2 in the play-offs, then the Kloten Flyers 4-2 and in the finals the ZSC Lions 4-0. HC Davos thus won the Swiss championship again.
After the championship season 2001/02 there were no major changes in the HC Davos squad. Beat Equilino ended his career and René Müller switched to coaching and sporadically came to the first team, to which Claudio Neff returned from HC Ambrì-Piotta in autumn . It became the season of second places. The HCD lost the final of the Spengler Cup against Team Canada, finished the NLA qualifying round in second place behind the ZSC Lions and lost the play-off final after a 2-0 lead against HC Lugano 4-2.
During the 2003/04 season , key players like Lonny Bohonos left the club, and there were financial and management problems. The team reached fourth place in the qualifying round and was eliminated in the play-offs in the quarter-finals against the ZSC Lions (2-4 in the series). The average audience fell by 20 percent - only at the Spengler Cup were the grandstands full. The HCD reached the final of the cup and lost it to Team Canada as in the previous year. In order to secure the license for the next season, a task force was set up, which achieved financial consolidation and thus received the NLA license for the following season.
In the 2004/05 season, HC Davos won the Spengler Cup in the final against HC Sparta Prague and won the 27th Swiss championship title in a final series of five games (4: 1) against the ZSC Lions . The builders of the success included the proven HCD regular players as well as the new goalkeeper Jonas Hiller (Award as Newcomer of the Year ) and the two No. 1 drafts of the NHL Joe Thornton and Rick Nash as well as the third NHL crack Niklas Hagman , who due to of the NHL lockout in Europe.
It was not enough for the championship double the following season - HC Lugano prevailed in the playoffs. At the European Champions Cup in Saint Petersburg , Arno Del Curto led his team to third place. The Russian team from Metallurg Magnitogorsk shone at the Spengler Cup , while the HCD finished the tournament in fourth place.
In the 2006/07 season, the HCD won its 14th Spengler Cup , in which the third No. 1 draft of the NHL, Alexandre Daigle , played a key role. In the final of the 80th edition of the tournament, Team Canada was defeated 3-2.
On April 9, 2007, the HCD won the title of Swiss champions again after seven finals against SC Bern. Robin Leblanc scored the only and decisive goal for the Grisons in the last third. In 2008 Davos turned the series against EV Zug in the quarterfinals after a 3-0 deficit and made it to the semi-finals. There it was over against the ZSC Lions.
In 2009 HC Davos, fourth in qualification, started the playoffs against HC Lugano. Five of the first six games went into overtime. In the seventh game, HC Davos defeated the Ticino 7-1 and made it to the semi-finals, where the blue-yellow met Friborg-Gottéron . After a 1: 3 deficit, the Bündner turned the series in their favor and moved into the final of the playoffs. On April 13, 2009, the HCD prevailed in the seventh game of the final series against the Kloten Flyers and became Swiss champions for the 29th time.
At the end of the qualifying round of the 2009/10 season, HC Davos was fourth in the table. In the playoff quarter-final there was a final surprise against the Kloten Flyers. HC Davos won the first two home games, but lost the third game in the Vaillant Arena at home with 1: 3. Away in Kloten they didn't manage to win and so the HCD were eliminated in the quarter-finals 4-2.
From 2010
The HCD won another Swiss championship title in the final against the Kloten Flyers in the 2010/11 season (total 4: 2 in games). They won the last game 3-2 in Kloten. This after the Graubünden team had just won the qualification and played strongly in both the quarter-finals (4-0 against Friborg Gottéron) and in the semifinals (4-0 against EV Zug).
In the 2011/12 season, HC Davos missed another qualifying win despite being tied with EV Zug due to a higher number of lost direct encounters. So Davos started the playoffs as runner-up, where they failed in the quarter-finals at the eventual champions from Zurich. The ZSC Lions won the series 4-0. After all, the HCD won the Spengler Cup for the 15th time this season by beating Dinamo Riga 3-2 in the final . The following season was mainly characterized by a renewed NHL lockout . So it was possible that the stars returned to Davos from the last lockout . Joe Thornton and Rick Nash could not prevent the HCD from fighting for playoff qualification. The further reinforcement by Loui Eriksson from the Dallas Stars was not enough for the fight for top positions. Ultimately, the HCD secured fifth place in the qualification with a strong final sprint. In the quarter-finals, the opponent was again called ZSC Lions - after a 3-1 lead, HC Davos lost the series 3: 4 and thus for the first time ever a 7th game since the introduction of the best-of-seven playoffs.
In the 2013/14 season out there were big changes, returned Andres Ambühl Davos back while Josef Marha and Petr Taticek left the HCD after many years. The season got off to a strong start and the Davos team greeted them from the top of the table in October. Towards the end of the season, however, the HCD crashed to 6th place and met the Kloten Flyers in the playoffs. HC Davos lost this series 2: 4 and had to accept their 3rd elimination in the quarter-finals in a row. In addition, the long-standing Davos regular and Captain Sandro Rizzi ended his career at the end of the season and several established players left the HCD. These have been replaced by young talents.
In the 2014/15 season , HC Davos only finished the main round of the National League A in fifth place, but then prevailed in the playoffs in the quarter-finals against Den EV Zug and in the semi-finals against SC Bern. HC Davos won the final series 4-1 against the ZSC Lions and won the Swiss championship for the 31st time.
In the 2015/16 season, the HCD qualified as the second best team, in the following playoffs they were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual champions SC Bern. In 2016/17 they were again among the top four teams after qualifying in fifth place, but missed the final in the series against Zug (2: 4 wins). A special feature of the season was that coach del Curto had relied on a very young goalkeeper duo ( Gilles Senn and Joren van Pottelberghe ) and thus initiated the change in this position.
In the 2017/18 season Davos was eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals against Biel (2-4 wins), the HCD had not failed in the championship round that early since 2014.
In November 2018, Arno Del Curto resigned as head coach after 22 years in office (and six championship titles with the HCD). He was succeeded by Harijs Vītoliņš after Michel Riesen had temporarily stepped in. Vītoliņš remained in office until the end of the 2018/19 game year, and Christian Wohlwend was hired as the new coach in April 2019 . Raeto Raffainer joined the HCD staff as the sporting director during the 2019 summer break.
Fans
In contrast to most of the other NLA clubs, HC Davos has fans all over Switzerland. At away games in the Unterland there are often above-average spectator numbers and the guest sectors are well filled. This can be explained by the popularity of Davos as a holiday destination, its sporting success, the large media presence through the Spengler Cup and the large number of Graubünden residents living in the lowlands.
Rivalries
HC Davos has not had any real rivalries or derbies since the EHC Arosa and EHC Chur were relegated, only HC Lugano is described by many fans as an arch-rival. However, games against SC Bern and the ZSC Lions are always particularly well attended and are described by many fans as classics.
