Marc Gianola (born November 1, 1973 in Samedan ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player ( defender ) who was continuously under contract with HC Davos from the National League A between 1993 and 2009 . Gianola has been the chief organizer of the Spengler Cup since 2016 .

Career

Marc Gianola began his career at EHC St. Moritz before moving to HC Davos in 1993. At HCD he developed into a solid defensive player over the next few years who knew how to convince both offensively and defensively. Gianola achieved his best scorer scores in the seasons 1999/2000 (10 goals, eight assists) and 2001/02 (five goals, 13 assists), adding another four scorer points in the playoffs and becoming Swiss champions with HC Davos . From 2004 he led the team of the HCD as captain on the ice and was considered the "extended arm" of the coach Arno Del Curto on the ice.

In October 2009, he ended his active career due to several knee injuries. In his career, he won a total of four Swiss championship titles with Davos (2002, 2005, 2007 and 2009) and the Spengler Cup four times .

International

Marc Gianola played his first game for Switzerland in an international competition at the European U18 Championship in 1991 . Two years later he took part with the Swiss U20 national team in the B World Cup for U20 Juniors in 1993 and was promoted to the A group.

In 1997 he played his first international tournament for the Swiss men's selection at the B World Cup and, with his teammates, was promoted to the A group again. He also played four games in the 1998 Olympic qualification , but was not appointed to the squad for the Olympic tournament itself. In his career, Gianola has completed more than 30 international matches for Switzerland, but was no longer used in World Cups from 1997.
