Women | Men |
At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano ( Japan ), a women's tournament was held for the first time in addition to the men's ice hockey tournament . For the men's tournament, negotiations between the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation ( IIHF ) with the North American professional league NHL ensured that the NHL took a break for the first time during the winter games. In return, the big six ice hockey nations were set for the final round and only had to intervene in the action a week later.
The Games of the Olympic hockey tournaments were held in two newly built at the games, ice rinks in Nagano place: in Wakasato in the Big Hat mentioned Hockey Stadium A (a hall for 10,104 spectators) and in Nagano Sports Park, Higashi-Wada in Hockey Stadium B Aqua Wing with 6,078 seats. The men's tournament was held from February 7th to 22nd.
qualification
The first eight of the 1995 Ice Hockey World Championship qualified directly for the tournament . In addition, Japan came as hosts and five teams through the qualification.
The qualification was held in three rounds. First, two qualifiers were determined in an elimination. The next round was played in four regional groups. The winners of the regional groups qualified for the final qualification, plus the teams ranked 9th to 11th in the 1995 World Cup (Germany, Norway, Austria) and the 1995 B World Champions (Slovakia). This was held in two groups, with the two group winners and the two runners-up qualifying for the Olympics. The two third placed players ultimately played the fifth Olympic participant against each other.

About the qualification:
Olympic ice hockey tournament
At the men's Olympic tournament, eight teams initially played in the preliminary round (the seventh and eighth place at the previous year's World Cup, the hosts and the five qualifiers) in two groups, with the two group winners for the intermediate round with the six seeded teams (the six best teams of the 1995 World Cup) Finland, Sweden, Canada, the Czech Republic, Russia and the USA qualified. The other teams in the preliminary round played placement games. The intermediate round was also held in two groups of four. No team was eliminated after graduation. The placements here were decisive for the scheduling of the quarter-finals as well as for the final placement, provided the teams were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
14 teams with 20 field players and three goalkeepers each were eligible to participate in the men's tournament . The eight best teams from the 1995 World Cup qualified directly in Sweden ( Finland , Sweden , Canada , Czech Republic , Russia , USA , France , Italy ). The host Japan was set. The other five places went to the above five qualifiers.
A total of 35 games were played, which were officially attended by 369,718 spectators.
