As "The Finnish Flash" (dt .: The Finnish Flash ) known winger is one of the top scorers in the history of the NHL . In his total of 21 seasons in the highest North American league, he was mainly on the ice for the Anaheim Ducks , with whom he won the Stanley Cup and also holds the franchise records for the most goals and scorer points. With the Finnish national team , he won the silver medal at both the World Cup and the Olympic Games. In his honor, both the Anaheim Ducks and the national team blocked his jersey number 8. He has been a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame since 2017 .

Career

Teemu Selänne grew up with his twin brother Paavo in Helsinki and Espoo . After initially working in a kindergarten, he played for Jokerit from 1988 to 1992 , with whom he was promoted to the SM-liiga in the 1988/89 season. During this time, Selänne was selected in the first round of the Winnipeg Jets in the first round in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft . There he played because he had to do his military service in Finland, but only from 1992 and reached 76 goals and 132 points as a rookie in his first season . Both set new rook records and Selänne replaced Peter Šťastný as the newcomer with the best points.

Together with the equally young players Keith Tkachuk and Alexei Schamnow, he formed a sensational trio there, which was also called the Olympic Line . During this time, Selänne was nicknamed the Finnish Flash because of its speed .

In February 1996, Selänne was transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim together with Marc Chouinard and a four-round vote in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Chad Kilger , Oleg Twerdowski and a third-round vote in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , where he was in the following formed the Dynamic Duo with Paul Kariya for five years . With the Finnish national team he won the bronze medal at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano .

From 2001 to 2003 he played with the San Jose Sharks . After a disappointing season there and then at Colorado Avalanche , he underwent knee surgery. He had to sit out the 2004/05 season to recover from the injury.

Since August 2005 Selänne has been playing again with the Anaheim Ducks, with which he initially signed a one-year contract. At the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin he lost three teeth after a stick blow from Derian Hatcher , but also won the silver medal. In the summer of 2006, Selänne extended his contract with the Ducks for another year.

On November 22, 2006, Selanne scored his 500th NHL goal as the 36th player in NHL history. After Jari Kurri, he is only the second Finn to reach this mark. On February 24, he made his 600th NHL assist.

With the Anaheim Ducks he finally won the Stanley Cup for the first time in the 2006/07 season . After the triumph, he did not extend his contract for the time being and did not take part in the Ducks training camp in the fall. In late January Selanne decided to return to the NHL and signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks until the end of the season. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season he signed a 2-year contract with the Ducks.

On March 21, 2010 Selänne scored the 600th goal of his career with a hit in the power play against the Colorado Avalanche. Selänne is the 18th player in the history of the NHL to reach this mark.

In the course of the 2010/11 season , he improved several franchise records for the Ducks and achieved both the 400 career goals mark and the number of points of over 800. At the age of 40, on March 28, 2011, he achieved a five- Points game against the Colorado Avalanche and "the finnish flash" scored his 22nd career hat trick in this game. After the end of the 2010/11 season, the Californians did not extend his expiring contract, so Selänne became a free agent. In mid-September 2011, the Finn decided to wear the Ducks jersey for another season and signed a one-year contract. After the short lockout season in 2012, in which Teemu Selänne scored 24 scorer points in 46 games (12 goals, 12 assists), the “Finnish Flash” last extended for another season at the end of August 2013. At the 2014 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team.

At the end of the 2013/14 season, Selänne ended his active career. At this time he was on the overall list of the most successful goalscorers of the NHL (regular season) in 11th place is behind Jaromír Jágr second best European. In addition, he still holds the goals, assists and scorer points record of the Anaheim Ducks.

In January 2015, the Anaheim Ducks locked its jersey number 8 as the first in their franchise . The honor took place at a home game of the Ducks against the Winnipeg Jets , where Selänne had started his career in the NHL. The Finnish national team did the same in December 2015 when the 8 was banned from the 2016 U20 World Cup .

In January 2017 Selänne was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame and a few months later into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

Teemu Selänne is married and has four children.
