Howard William "Howie" Meeker , CM (born November 4, 1923 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official as well as sports commentator. In his active time he played from 1946 to 1954 for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League .

Career

Howie Meeker began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Maple Leafs , for which he played in the National Hockey League from 1946 to 1954 . During this time, he won the Stanley Cup four times with the Canadians in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951 . In his first NHL season he also received the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie . After his time in Toronto, Meeker was under contract for two years with the Pittsburgh Hornets from the American Hockey League , which he looked after as a player-coach.

After his career as a professional ice hockey player, Meeker was in the 1956/57 season as a replacement for King Clancy head coach at his ex-club, the Toronto Maple Leafs , with whom he missed the playoffs. After the season he became general manager , but the Maple Leafs fired him before the start of the 1957/58 season .

Meeker later started a television career. From 1973 to 1977 his own show Howie Meeker's Hockey School was broadcast on CBC Television . In the 1970s and 1980s, Meeker worked, among other things, as a game analyst for Hockey Night in Canada . From 1987 to 1998, the former professional ice hockey player worked for the sports broadcaster TSN .

In 1998 Howie Meeker received the Fost Hewitt Award for his ice hockey broadcasts and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In 2010 he was accepted as a member of the Order of Canada .
