history

The station began broadcasting on April 2, 1984, making it one of the first private special interest stations in Canada. The station was operated under the name Action Canada Sports Network by the Labatt Brewing Company . On September 1, 1984, the station was renamed The Sports Network . The station was primarily intended to promote the brewery's products in connection with sporting events. In addition, the Toronto Blue Jays sports team belonging to the brewery should also be promoted. In 1989, a second channel was started in parallel, broadcasting in French and known as Réseau des sports (RDS) .

The brewery had to sell the station due to restrictions imposed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on re-granting the broadcasting licenses. The transmitter was sold to a consortium of investors, NetStar Communication. In 2000 the station was taken over by CTV. In 2010 Bell Media took over the station from CTV .
