Jonathan Huberdeau (born June 4, 1993 in Saint-Jérôme , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . The winger has been with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL) since October 2011 , which had selected him in third position in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft . In 2013 he was honored with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. Since the 2019/20 season he has held the Panthers franchise records for most assists and scorer points.
Career
Jonathan Huberdeau played for the Vikings de Saint-Eustache in a Québec junior league before he was drafted in the first round of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec Entry Draft in 18th position by the Saint John Sea Dogs in 2009 . In the 2009/10 season , the striker completed 61 regular season games for the Sea Dogs, scoring 35 points . In the subsequent play-offs , the team reached the LHJMQ final and lost to Moncton Wildcats in the best-of-seven series with 4-2 games.
In the 2010/11 season, Huberdeau increased his score significantly. The Canadian played 67 games in the regular season and scored 105 points, making him the third best scorer in the entire league. In the play-offs, the Sea Dogs reached the final again. There they prevailed against the Gatineau Olympiques and won the Coupe du Président . Huberdeau was then awarded the Guy Lafleur trophy as the most valuable player in the play-offs. Through the LHJMQ championship, the Saint John Sea Dogs also won a participation in the 2011 Memorial Cup . In this tournament, the Sea Dogs prevailed in the final against the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors from the Ontario Hockey League and won their first Memorial Cup . Jonathan Huberdeau then received the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player , and he was also elected to the All-Star Team of the competition.
In the KHL Junior Draft 2011 , the striker was selected in the first round in fifth place by Vityas Chekhov . Huberdeau was surprised by the election and said he will not play for the team. A little later he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 by the Florida Panthers in the first round in third position. In October 2011 he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Panthers.
In the 2011/12 season, Huberdeau played again for his junior team, for which he was only on the ice in 37 games. Nevertheless, the winger was able to record 72 scorer points and with +53 had the best plus / minus balance in the entire league. In the play-offs, the Sea Dogs once again made it to the final, where they defended their title with a sweep against the Océanic de Rimouski . Huberdeau was then elected to the LHJMQ's Second All-Star Team and was awarded the Paul Dumont Trophy as Personality of the Year for his leadership skills . At the Memorial Cup , Huberdeau was the best scorer of his team with seven points from four games, but the Sea Dogs failed in the semifinals of the tournament due to the Cataractes de Shawinigan .
Since the start of the 2012/13 NHL season was delayed until January 2013 due to the lockout , Huberdeau initially played again in Saint John. After he again led the statistics of his team in the LHJMQ with 45 scorer points in 30 games, he was appointed to the NHL squad of the Florida Panthers at the season opener. In his debut game against the Carolina Hurricanes , Huberdeau was able to score one goal and prepare two more.
In September 2016, the Panthers prematurely extended the Canadian's contract for a further six years, from now on with an average annual salary of 5.9 million US dollars. A little later, however, the attacker sustained an ankle injury, due to which he missed most of the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 season, however, he set his previous career best with 69 points scorer, but narrowly missed the playoffs with the team. The same happened the following year, when Huberdeau scored 92 points and he also set a new franchise record with 62 assists . In the following season 2019/20 he overtook Olli Jokinen with his 232th assist and 420th scorer point, so that he has also held these two team records since then.
International
Jonathan Huberdeau first represented the Canadian national team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2010 . The striker appeared in five games and scored three assists. The Canadians won the gold medal at this tournament after beating the US selection in the final .
