Olli Veli Pekka Jokinen (born December 5, 1978 in Kuopio ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player . The center forward played 1,237 games in the National Hockey League in 17 seasons , most of them for the Florida Panthers . With the Finnish national team , he won several silver and bronze medals at world championships and Olympic Winter Games .

Career

Olli Jokinen began his career in the youth division of KalPa Kuopio and made his debut in the 1995/96 season for the men's team of the same club in the top Finnish league, the SM-liiga . In the summer of 1996 he left his hometown club and was signed by HIFK Helsinki , for which he went on the ice in the following years. During the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , Jokinen was selected in the first round as third by the Los Angeles Kings . The Kings then brought him to Los Angeles, but after eight NHL games without scorer points, he left North America and returned to the HIFK. There he found his way back to his old level of performance and scored 39 scorer points in the remaining 30 games. The HIFK reached the playoffs and advanced to the finals of the Finnish championship. There Jokinen's team defeated Ilves Tampere 3-0 and reached the club's first championship in 15 years. Jokinen's accomplishments were rewarded with two awards after the season when he received the Matti Keinonen Trophy and Jari Kurri Trophy .

After these successes, Jokinen tried again to gain a foothold in the NHL. He completed much of the 1998/99 season for the Los Angeles Kings and scored 21 points. In June 1999, the Kings sent together with Josh Green and Mathieu Biron to the New York Islanders , who in return gave up Žigmund Pálffy , Bryan Smolinski and Marcel Cousineau . For the Islanders he reached 21 points and 80 penalty minutes in 82 NHL games before he was sent to the Florida Panthers in late June 2000 in exchange for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kwascha . With the Panthers he developed into a leading player in the following years and increased his points yield from year to year. During the 2002/03 season he was nominated to replace the injured Saku Koivu for the 53rd NHL All-Star Game and scored a goal during the game. He also achieved a total of 65 points scorer in 81 games this season, setting new personal records and strengthening his status as the center of the first row of attacks. With the beginning of the following season he was appointed captain of the Panthers and held this office until 2008.

During the NHL strike season 2004/05 he returned to Europe and first went on the ice in the Swiss National League A for the Kloten Flyers . After eight games for Kloten, he left Switzerland and was signed by Södertälje SK from the Swedish Elitserien . Jokinen played 23 games in the Elitserien for Södertälje before moving to HIFK Helsinki in his home country. With his home club from Helsinki he reached the playoffs in 2005 , but retired in the first round with 1: 4 against Lukko Rauma . With the conclusion of a new NHL collective agreement , the game operation in the NHL was resumed in the fall of 2005 and Jokinen returned to the Florida Panthers. During the 2005/06 season he collected 89 scorer points in 82 games and again achieved personal bests, which he improved in the following season with 91 points. In addition, he set new internal team records for the Panthers for game-winning goals, career goals and points.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Jokinen was out of shape - still he scored 34 goals and 37 assists in 82 games for Florida. On February 10, 2008, Jokinen accidentally injured Richard Zedník when he slit Zedník's neck with his skate and Zedník was admitted to hospital.

During the NHL Entry Draft 2008 , the Finn was given in exchange for Nick Boynton , Keith Ballard and a draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes . With the Coyotes he was one of the top performers with 42 scorer points from 57 NHL games in the 2008/09 season . Since the Coyotes did not reach the playoffs, they sent Jokinen to the Calgary Flames on the day of the Trade Deadline , March 4, 2009 . In return, Matthew Lombardi and Brandon Prust switched to the Coyotes. In his first game for the Flames, Jokinen scored two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers . A year later, Jokinen was again the object of a swap - he was handed over to the New York Rangers on February 1, 2010 together with Prust , who swapped Christopher Higgins and Aleš Kotalík for it. After the season, he joined the Calgary Flames for a second time.

After playing the 2012/13 season and the following season with the Winnipeg Jets , he signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators in July 2014 .

However, the Predators gave him to the Toronto Maple Leafs after six months, including Brendan Leipsic and a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft , who in return transferred Mike Santorelli and Cody Franson to Nashville. For the Maple Leafs, however, the Finn only made six appearances until he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in March of the same year and Joakim Lindström and a success-based six- round voting right for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft moved to Toronto. In St. Louis, he ended the season, but received no new contract beyond.

Finally, in March 2017, Jokinen officially announced the end of his active career and was signed for a day by the Florida Panthers, who then honored him with a ceremony before a game.

International

Olli Jokinen started to represent his home country Finland in international tournaments early in his career. In 1996 he won the silver medal at the European Championships with the U18 junior selection and the gold medal at the U20 Junior World Championship in 1998 . From 1998 he was also used for the men's national team and has since won two silver and three bronze medals at world championships.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he and the Finnish team won the silver medal. Jokinen contributed six goals and two assists to this success. At the 2014 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team.
