Žigmund Pálffy (born May 5, 1972 in Skalica , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player who was active for the New York Islanders , Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and the HK 36 Skalica in the Slovakian Extraliga .
Career
Before Pálffy came to the National Hockey League , he played in his home country for AC Nitra and HC Dukla Trenčín . On June 9, 1991, he was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round as the 26th player overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft . After eight years on Long Island Pálffy moved on June 19, 1999 together with Bryan Smolinski , goalkeeper Marcel Cousineau and a four-round draft right in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings ; in return, the Islanders center Olli Jokinen , winger Josh Green , defender Mathieu Biron and a first-round draft pick. He stayed with the Kings until the 2004/05 lockout .
He signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on August 6, 2005 for $ 13.5 million . On January 18, 2006 Žigmund Pálffy ended his career surprisingly due to a protracted shoulder injury that plagued him since the 2003/04 season. In the summer of 2007 he announced his comeback and signed a contract with the Slovak first division club HK 36 Skalica . At HK 36 he quickly developed into a leading player and set records for most points in the extra league both in the 2007/08 season and in the following season . In addition, he achieved the greatest success in the club's history with Skalica in 2009: reaching the playoff final.
During the 2010/11 season he paused again from ice hockey until he returned as team captain to HK 36 in 2011 and was top scorer of the Extraliga main round. In the following two game years he was still one of the top performers of the team and continued to be the team captain before finally ending his career in July 2013. In 2019 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame together with his long-time national team colleague Miroslav Šatan .
