The 48th National Hockey League All-Star Game was played on January 18, 1998 in Vancouver , British Columbia . The host of the game was the Vancouver Canucks for the second time since 1976 .

The event, which took place in the new General Motors Place , was attended by the best players of the National Hockey League . The Winter Olympics also took place in Nagano that year. Against this background and also to increase national pride, the composition of the teams had been changed. In the game, the best players from North America competed against the best players from other continents. The starting formations of the All-Star Teams could be determined by the fans through a vote. For the last time, two players per team were officially designated as "Commissioners Selections" . There was also no longer the honorary captain in the following years. There were 18,422 spectators in the stadium.

The supporting program included a game by the women's national teams from the United States and Canada, which also used this as an opportunity to prepare for the Olympics. Women's ice hockey was Olympic for the first time this year.
