host

The Montréal Canadiens were actually intended to host the 41st All-Star Game. However, since Québec had set new standards with the Rendez-vous '87 , they wanted to wait with their own implementation of the All-Star-Game. Instead, Pittsburgh was awarded the contract, which should have waited until 1993.

new hits

The league management introduced some decisive innovations in the 41st edition. The game no longer took place on a Tuesday evening, as before, but on a Sunday afternoon so that the whole country could follow the game live. In addition, a "Heroes of Hockey" game was introduced in which former NHL players should compete against each other in two sections. The organizers also introduced the All-Star Skills Competition , in which the NHL All-Stars competed against each other in order to be able to compare their individual skills. This was the first time that an all-star weekend was held. In order to make the whole thing even more interesting for the TV viewers, numerous officials, the referees and the coaches of both teams were equipped with microphones. During the breaks in the game, the television stations were allowed to conduct short interviews with the players, which particularly annoyed the employees of Hockey Night in Canada , who tried to establish this without success in previous years.

Heroes of Hockey

For the first and only time, the best former players from both conferences competed against each other. From the following all-star game onwards, the host's best ex-players always played against the best of the rest.

Gordie Howe , who wanted to do this four years earlier but was prevented from doing so by the league, boycotted the game along with several other former league greats.
