From 1978 Gartner played in the World Hockey Association with the Cincinnati Stingers . In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft , the Washington Capitals selected him as fourth overall in the first round and then signed him. Gartner was one of the best goalscorers in the NHL, but unlike other top scorers, he was characterized by consistency over many years. He was rarely found among the top scorers of a season and he also won no trophies, but only in two of his 19 NHL years, the 1994/95 season shortened due to strike and his final season, he had scored fewer than 30 goals. His best playing time came in 1984/85 when he scored a total of 102 scorer points in 80 games in the regular season , which he achieved with 50 goals and 52 assists. This made Gartner the tenth-best scorer that season. Shortly before the end of the 1993/94 season , he moved from the Rangers to Toronto. The Rangers then won the Stanley Cup , which Gartner never succeeded. Only five players have scored more NHL goals than Gartner.

In 2001 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
