The Canada Cup 1984 ( French Coupe Canada 1984 ) was the third edition of the competition of the same name . It was held from September 1 to 18, 1984 in the North American cities of Buffalo , Calgary , Edmonton , Halifax , London , Montréal and Vancouver . The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

Six teams took part in the third edition of the competition. It was the first and only time that the Federal Republic of Germany took part in the tournament. She replaced Finland due to fifth place at the 1983 World Cup in her own country. Canada won the tournament with two wins in the final series against Sweden . The best scorer of the tournament was the Canadian Wayne Gretzky with five goals and twelve points. His compatriot John Tonelli was voted Most Valuable Player .

With Peter Šťastný , Bryan Trottier and Glenn Resch , three players competed for a different national team than before. Šťastný was part of the Canadian squad after he had played for Czechoslovakia at the 1976 Canada Cup . Trottier and Resch played in the dress of the United States . Before that, Trottier had worn the Canadians jersey at the Canada Cup 1981 , Resch had won the 1976 competition with the maple leaves .

mode

The six teams played the placements in the preliminary round in a single round, so that each team played five games. There were two points for a win, and one point each for a draw. The four teams with the highest points in the group of six qualified for the semi-finals.

The two semi-finals were decided in the knockout system , the winners of the semi-finals moved into the final. In contrast, the final - as in 1976 - was played in the "best-of-three" mode.
