Career

Mullen grew up in Hell's Kitchen in New York City with his brother Brian , who also played in the NHL. He had his first successes in ice hockey at Boston College . He had hoped to get into the US Olympic team for the 1980 Winter Olympics , which later managed the Miracle on Ice and became Olympic champion, but then decided on a professional contract. There he was successful in the CHL with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and was soon called to the NHL in St. Louis.

After good years with the St. Louis Blues , he moved to the Calgary Flames , where he won his first Stanley Cup in 1989 . After moving to Pittsburgh , he won two more Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

His successes also include winning a world championship with the US team and participating in the NHL First All-Star team . At the end of his career, he was the American player with the most NHL points. He was the first American to score 500 goals in the NHL.

From 2000 to 2005 he was the assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins . On December 20, 2005, he took over as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , the farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the American Hockey League . In the summer of 2007 he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as an assistant coach, for which he worked for ten years before he was fired after the 2016/17 season.

In 2000 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame , after he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998. He had previously been awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy together with his brother in 1995 for his services to US ice hockey.
