Joseph Patrick "Joe" Mullen (born February 26, 1957 in Hell's Kitchen , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player and coach , who in the course of his active career between 1975 and 1997, among other things, 1205 games for the St. Louis Blues , Calgary Flames , Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . Mullen won the Stanley Cup three times during his 16 seasons in the NHL - in 1989 with the Calgary Flames and in 1991 and 1992 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His career was crowned with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000 , after he had been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame two years earlier .
Career
Mullen grew up in Hell's Kitchen in New York City with his brother Brian , who also played in the NHL. He had his first successes in ice hockey at Boston College . He had hoped to get into the US Olympic team for the 1980 Winter Olympics , which later managed the “ Miracle on Ice ” and became Olympic champion, but then decided on a professional contract. There he was successful in the CHL with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and was soon called to the NHL in St. Louis.
After good years with the St. Louis Blues , he moved to the Calgary Flames , where he won his first Stanley Cup in 1989 . After moving to Pittsburgh , he won two more Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.
His successes also include winning a world championship with the US team and participating in the NHL First All-Star team . At the end of his career, he was the American player with the most NHL points. He was the first American to score 500 goals in the NHL.
From 2000 to 2005 he was the assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins . On December 20, 2005, he took over as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , the farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the American Hockey League . In the summer of 2007 he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as an assistant coach, for which he worked for ten years before he was fired after the 2016/17 season.
In 2000 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame , after he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998. He had previously been awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy together with his brother in 1995 for his services to US ice hockey.
