James Grant Schoenfeld (born September 4, 1952 in Galt , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and coach who played for the Buffalo Sabers , Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League from 1972 to 1985 .

Career

As a player

During his junior years he played for the London Knights with Darryl Sittler , the Hamilton Red Wings and Niagara Falls Flyers in the OHA . There he fell to its hardness and determination and has been so from the Buffalo Sabers in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1972 selected in the first round in fifth place.

In the 1972/73 season he made the leap into the NHL. A neck injury prevented him from playing much of his sophomore season. In the third year, he was particularly noticeable for his 184 penalty minutes. His best season was 1979/80 , in which he played again after 1977 in the NHL All-Star Game . In December 1981 he moved with Danny Gare to the Detroit Red Wings , who gave the Sabers to Mike Foligno , Dale McCourt and Brent Peterson .

In the 1983/84 season he played for the Boston Bruins before returning to the Buffalo Sabers.

As a trainer

During his final season in Buffalo, he retired to coach the AHL farm team, the Rochester Americans . A year later he was behind the gang of Sabers in the NHL. But under General Manager Scotty Bowman he was already rid of the post by the middle of the season. From the 1987/88 season he coached the New Jersey Devils for two and a half years . During this time he was suspended for insulting the referee in the playoffs.

During the 1993/94 season he took over the Washington Capitals and stayed there until he moved to the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1997/98 season. From 2002 he was assistant coach for the New York Rangers . In this organization he also trained the AHL farm team Hartford Wolf Pack and is currently assistant to General Manager Glen Sather .
