Career

As a player

Regier began his career in 1974 with the Lethbridge Broncos in the Western Hockey League . After two seasons with the Broncos, he was selected ( drafted ) by the California Seals in 1976 and made his NHL debut in the 1977/78 season with the Cleveland Barons, who had moved to California in 1976. He completed 15 games for the Barons before he was sent to the Minor Leagues for the Fort Worth Texans . In January 1978 he was transferred to the New York Islanders together with Wayne Merrick in exchange for Jean-Paul Parisé and Jean Potvin . Until the 1982/83 season he was used exclusively in the minor leagues before he stepped on the ice in a total of eleven games for the Islanders in the NHL. In 1984 he resigned from his playing career and moved to the administration of the Islanders.

As a manager and trainer

Regier held various administrative and trainer functions in the Islanders organization before becoming assistant trainer for the Hartford Whalers in 1991/92 . He later served as assistant to GM Don Maloney and also as interim manager after Maloney was fired during the 1995/96 season .

Regier was hired in the summer of 1997 as GM of the Buffalo Sabers. In his second season as GM, his Sabers made it to the final of the Stanley Cup , in which they lost to the Dallas Stars in six games. During the Buffalo years he was responsible for the drafting and development of players such as Maxim Afinogenow , Henrik Tallinder , Aleš Kotalík , Ryan Miller , Paul Gaustad , Derek Roy , Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek . He also handled some important engagements, such as the transfers of Chris Drury , Tim Connolly , Daniel Brière and JP Dumont , always keeping a balanced budget.

On November 13, 2013 Regier was dismissed from his post after the worst start to the season in the Sabers team history and ongoing failures. Tim Murray followed him .
