Career

During his time at Kent Prep School , he was selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round at position 88. Capuano played on the University of Maine's ice hockey team in Hockey East from 1985 to 1988 . There the defender was one of the team's regulars and scored 50 points in 43 games in the 1987/88 season. In the 1988/89 season he played exclusively for the Newmarket Saints and came to 75 appearances in the American Hockey League before he made his debut for the Maple Leafs in the NHL the following season. But there was only one use for the Leafs in the NHL. On December 20, 1989, he was transferred to the New York Islanders in an exchange deal . Capuano played the season with the Springfield Indians in the AHL to the end after he had previously played again in Newmarket.

In March 1990, the Islanders sent him to the Vancouver Canucks for Jeff Rohlicek . There, too, his breakthrough in the NHL was denied. But he came to three missions for the Canucks and was then sent to the Milwaukee Admirals in the International Hockey League for the rest of the season . On August 1, 1991, he signed a contract with the Boston Bruins as a free agent . After two games in the NHL, his career with the Bruins was over, then he ended the 1991/92 season with the Maine Mariners in the AHL and then announced his end of career.

The 1996/97 season he began as an assistant coach with the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks in the East Coast Hockey League . After Barry Smith was released, he was introduced as head coach of the Knoxville Cherokees that same season . Capuano could not bring the team back on the road to success in the course of the season and missed the playoffs as the last of the East Division . The following season he was a coach at the Pee Dee Pride . In three seasons in a row Capuano led the team into the playoffs and failed in the 1998/99 game year only in the round of the last four against eventual champions Mississippi Sea Wolves . During the 2000/01 season he was appointed coach at the Pee Dee Pride after the departure of Frank Anzalone . After 15 games, his second engagement there was already over.

In the 2005/06 season he worked as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. He then took on the same position with their farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , and was promoted to head coach a year later. In three years he made it into the playoffs twice, where he was eliminated in the first round. The 2010/11 season began Capuano with the Sound Tigers. After Scott Gordon was fired on November 15, 2010, Capuano was named coach of the Islanders. Pat Bingham filled his vacant position at Bridgeport .

In September 2016 he was the assistant coach of Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 behind the gang, but was eliminated with the team in the group stage.

In January 2017, Capuano was sacked by the Islanders when the team ranked last in the Eastern Conference after 42 games. Doug Weight was introduced as the successor . Capuano then acted as assistant to Jeff Blashill at the 2017 World Cup . In June 2017, the Florida Panthers introduced him as Bob Boughner's new assistant . He then worked there for two years before joining the Ottawa Senators in June 2019 in the same position .
