The Knoxville Cherokees were an American ice hockey franchise based in Knoxville , Tennessee . The Knoxville Cherokees were one of the five founding teams of the East Coast Hockey League . The venue for the Cherokees was the James White Civic Coliseum .
history
The franchise was founded in 1988 and began playing in the newly formed East Coast Hockey League. Head coach was Pierre Hamel , who played in the NHL during his career. The Cherokees reached 65 points in their first season, which placed them third in the group and qualified for the play-offs. In the first round they were defeated by the Johnstown Chiefs in four games. In the following season, the Cherokees only got 48 points and missed the playoffs. In the 1990/91 season, the Cherokees had the best regular season in franchise history. With 97 points they won the West Division and the Henry Brabham Cup , but failed again in the first playoff round at the Louisville Icehawks . In the following two years the playoffs were missed. In the last four seasons of the franchise, the Cherokees managed to get into the finals three times, but where they could only reach the second round in 1995/96. In 1997 the franchise was dissolved and relocated to Florence , South Carolina , where a new franchise was formed under the name Pee Dee Pride .
