history
The Roanoke Express was founded in 1993 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League . The team's most successful season was in the 1998/99 season, when they first completed the Northeast Division first, before they only entered the playoffs for the Kelly Cup after a bye and victories over the Dayton Bombers and the Chesapeake Icebreakers in the fourth round the later final loser Richmond Renegades in the best-of-seven series with a sweep was defeated. Overall, the team was one of the ECHL's more successful athletes, as it reached the playoffs every time in the eleven years of its existence. Nevertheless, the franchise was dissolved following the 2003/04 season due to falling audience numbers. The gap left by the Roanoke Express in the region was filled by the Roanoke Valley Vipers , who only took part in the United Hockey League's game operations in the 2005/06 season .
