The Pensacola Ice Pilots were an American ice hockey franchise based in Pensacola , Florida that played for the ECHL from 1996 to 2008 . The Ice Pilots played their home games in the Pensacola Civic Center , where the Pensacola Ice Flyers play their games as the successor team in the Southern Professional Hockey League .

history

The franchise was founded in 1996 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . The head coach was Allen Pedersen , who played in the NHL during his playing career. In their first season, the Ice Pilots reached the play-offs, in which they defeated the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks and Richmond Renegades , but were narrowly defeated by the South Carolina Stingrays in five games in the semifinals . In the following seasons the results improved and the Ice Pilots defeated the New Orleans Brass , Charlotte Checkers and Louisiana IceGators in the play-offs . In the finals of the Kelly Cup, Pensacola was defeated in six games by the Hampton Roads Admirals .

In the following seven years, the Ice Pilots reached the play-offs five times, but never got past the second round. In the 2004/05 season, the Ice Pilots gained 107 points in the regular season, which they won the South Division and the Henry Brabham Cup . In the play-offs, the Ice Pilots failed in the first round against the Greenville Grrrowl . For the last three seasons of the franchise, the Pensacola Ice Pilots missed the finals. The franchise was then dissolved due to financial problems.

Cooperations

Over the years, the Ice Pilots had entered into various collaborations with NHL teams . So they were the farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs , Tampa Bay Lightning , Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders . They also had a contract with the Houston Eros from the AHL in the 2004/05 season .
