history
The franchise was founded in 1995 and began playing in the Colonial Hockey League . The team's first head coach was Brad Buetow . In their first season, the Mallards qualified for the play-offs, although they had a negative record with 30 wins and 39 losses. In the first round, the team was defeated in four games without a win against the Flint Generals and was eliminated from the competition. In the following season, they made it to the finals again. With 105 points in the regular season , the team managed a remarkable increase of 40 points compared to the previous year. In the first two rounds, the team prevailed against Muskegon Fury and the Thunder Bay Thunder Cats before they met the Flint Generals in the finals of the Colonial Cup . In six games, the team defeated the Generals and won the championship cup for the first time. In the following year, this success was even exceeded, when the Mallards provided both the best team of the regular season and the best team of the play-offs.
Also in two seasons 1998/99 and 1999/2000 the franchise qualified again for the finals, but lost under head coach Paul Gillis to Muskegon Fury and this was then removed from his office. His successor Matt Shaw also failed in the finals in the following year at the Muskegon Fury. Success returned to the Mallards under long-time former NHL player Paul MacLean as head coach. With 55 wins, 12 defeats and 117 points, the team was the team with the highest points in the regular season for the third time in history. In addition, the Mallards won their third Colonial Cup in the finals against the Asheville Smoke .
In the later years this success could not be continued, only in the 2002/03 season they made it into the finals, in which the team was defeated by the Fort Wayne Komets in five games . From 2003 to 2007, the team always qualified for the finals, but failed four times in a row in the first round.
Since the newly established AHL franchise of the Quad City Flames was relocated to Moline in the state of Illinois in 2007, the Mallards temporarily suspended their gaming operations and were inactive until the Flames were relocated again two years later. For the 2009/10 season, the franchise resumed gaming operations in the league, which has now been renamed the International Hockey League .
Frank Anzalone , who had previously coached the Newmarket Saints and the Lowell Lock Monsters in the American Hockey League , was hired as head coach. With 29 wins and 35 defeats, the team had a negative balance for the second time in franchise history and for the first time failed to qualify for the finals. The Quad City Mallards have been playing in the Central Hockey League since the 2010/11 season . In June 2011, David Bell , a former minor league player and former assistant coach at the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League , was introduced as the Mallards' new head coach and general manager.
On October 7, 2014, the Mallards and the other six remaining CHL participants were accepted into the ECHL . The CHL's game operations were discontinued due to fewer teams.
After the ECHL season 2017/18, the Mallards stopped playing.
Farm teams
The Quad City Mallards maintained numerous collaborations with teams from various leagues. From 1995 to 1997 they entered into a collaboration with the Fort Wayne Komets from the International Hockey League and acted as their farm team during this time . The cooperation with the Portland Pirates from 1997 to 2001 was their longest cooperation with another franchise. For the 2004/05 season, they were the farm team for three AHL franchises, the Chicago Wolves , Hershey Bears and the Portland Pirates. Since 2009 there has been a collaboration with the Philadelphia Flyers and the Adirondack Phantoms .
