Sjarhej Stas ( Belarusian Сяргей Стась , Russian Сергей Стась / Sergei Stas; born April 28, 1974 in Minsk , Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a former Belarusian ice hockey player . Stas has been working as an ice hockey coach since the end of his career and has been the head coach of HK Homel since 2019 .
Career
In 1992 the professional career began for the then 18-year-old junior player at Dinamo Minsk . The following season he began at Tiwali Minsk, before he moved across the Atlantic to Lake Erie in the East Coast Hockey League . In the following years he played in various minor leagues in North America, but could never recommend himself for assignments in the National Hockey League . Therefore, he moved to Germany for the 1997/98 season to the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League . After two successful years in Nuremberg, he decided to move to the Revierlöwen in Oberhausen .
Further stations in the DEL were the Augsburger Panthers , Krefeld Penguins and the Wolves Freiburg. With the penguins from Krefeld he became German champion in the 2002/03 season , but was deleted from the squad after the season, whereupon he moved to Freiburg. After the wolves were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, he signed a contract with the second division promoted Moskitos Essen in 2004 , before joining the Dresden Ice Lions for the 2005/06 season. In his second year in Dresden he struggled with injuries and could not help the team in the play-downs of the 2nd Bundesliga. After the season he decided to move back to his homeland, where he played one season at HK Junost Minsk to get another chance to play for the Belarusian national team. For the 2008/09 season Sjarhej Stas moved again to the Wölfen Freiburg. He remained there for two years before he the 2010/11 season for HC SHAKHTYOR SOLIGORSK moved from the Belarusian Extraliga.
International
For Belarus , Stas took part in the B World Championships in 1997 , 2002 and 2004 and the A World Championships in 1998 , 2000 , 2001 and 2003 . He was also in his country's squad for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City .
