The 2008/09 season was the eleventh season since the establishment of the new 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and began in September 2008 with 13 clubs. It is organized by the ice hockey game operating company. The newcomers to the league were Dresdner Eislöwen , Tölzer Löwen and Wölfe Freiburg . The Kassel Huskies were promoted to the German Ice Hockey League and the EV Landsberg relegated to the Oberliga . The Eisbären Regensburg and the Mosquitos Essen no longer received a license after filing for bankruptcy.
When insolvency proceedings were opened in the spring of 2009, the Tölzer Löwen were determined to be relegated, and a round of relegation was no longer played. The second division champion Bietigheim Steelers had the opportunity to rise after the withdrawal of the Füchse Duisburg from the German ice hockey league , but did not participate in the licensing procedure for the 2009/10 DEL season.

Attendees
mode
The league plays a double round with 13 teams (48 games per club). As in the DEL , the pre-playoffs will be played from 2008/09, that is, the first six teams in the double round qualify directly for the playoffs, the clubs in places 7-10 play in best-of-three mode two more play-off participants. The teams in places 11-13 were to play a relegated team in a double round by February 2009, but this was canceled on February 28, 2009 due to the Tölzer Löwen filing for bankruptcy . Similar to the NHL and the DEL , both teams only have a maximum of 4 field players in the extension of a game. In the last possible pre-play-off or play-off game of a series, the game is extended until a hit is scored.
Player licenses
A maximum of 15 field players with a German player license and born before January 1, 1985 or without a German player license per game may be listed on the score sheet (Ü23 rule). A maximum of 6 players without a German player license may be listed on the score sheet, but an unlimited number of players without a German player license can be signed up until the transfer deadline (January 31, 2009). For players who are eligible to play for a selection of the DEB and who were born on or after January 1, 1985, a one-time, non-changeable funding license agreement can be concluded between a team in the Oberliga and the 2nd Bundesliga (ESBG funding license). For players who are eligible to play for a selection of the DEB and were born on or after January 1, 1983, a support license agreement can be concluded between a team of the DEL and the 2nd Bundesliga (DEL support license).
Special rules
- In the play-off, pre-play-off and relegation round games, a necessary extra time of 20 minutes instead of the normal 5 minutes will be played.
- After the end of the preliminary round, the 10-minute penalties pronounced against a player will be deleted; instead, players who have received a 10-minute disciplinary penalty in different games will automatically apply to the next after the second instead of the third Game locked.
- If a DEL licensed player has played fewer than 10 games for the respective ESBG team after the preliminary round or if the player is used in a DEL game after the preliminary round, the eligibility to play for a team in the 2nd Bundesliga or in the upper league expires.
- If an ESBG licensed player has played less than 10 games with the licensing team after the preliminary round, the license to play for the licensed team expires.
- After the preliminary round, an ESBG sponsorship license player can only be used either by the sponsoring licensing team or by the sponsoring licensing team.
- Every team in the 2nd Bundesliga must provide evidence that the cooperation partner in the junior team between September 2008 and March 2009 has at least 3 × 60 minute ice training for the teams in the small school children (U9), small school children (U11), boys (U13), schoolchildren (U15), youth (U17) or DNL are available and that at least 5 trainers (of which at least 1 with a B license and 4 with a C license) are employed by the cooperation partner.
Broadcast on television
The DSF was a magazine for 2. Bundesliga usually on Saturdays at 21:30. Up to four Friday games will be summarized and background reports will be broadcast.
Preliminary round
A team was awarded three points for a win after regular time, if the game was tied after 60 minutes, both teams received one point, and the winner of the five-minute extra time or after a necessary penalty shootout was awarded an additional point. If a team lost in regular time, it received no points.
Abbreviations: Sp = games, S = victories, OTS = victories after overtime, SOS = victories after penalty shoot-out, OTN = defeats after extra time, SON = defeats after penalty shoot-out, N = defeats, (N) = newcomer
Explanations: direct qualification for the play -offs , play-off qualifying round , season ended , bankruptcy petition after the preliminary round , therefore forced relegation

Relegation round
Initially, it was planned to play a relegation round. Accordingly, the teams in positions 11 to 13 of the preliminary round should determine a relegated team between March 13 and April 19, 2009 in a double round. The teams in 1st and 2nd place in the relegation round should remain in the 2nd Bundesliga, the third placed in the relegation round should be relegated to the top division.
The shareholders' meeting of the 2nd Bundesliga on February 28, 2009 in Munich decided that the Tölzer Löwen would not take part in the play-offs after the main round had been filed for bankruptcy. Thus, the lions were determined to be economically relegated and could apply for the top division season 2009/10 if the bankruptcy proceedings were positive.
The pre-play-offs and play-offs were played according to plan, but after the main round all teams placed behind the Tölzers moved up one place. The relegation round was omitted and the ETC Crimmitschau and the Dresdner Eislöwen were to be compensated in equal parts (40,000 € each) from the Tölzer Löwen guarantee due to the lost gaming revenue, which did not happen due to the lack of funds.
