The 1958/59 season of the ice hockey league was the first season of the division as the second highest German ice hockey league under the Bundesliga .

VfL Bad Nauheim and ESV Kaufbeuren were promoted to the Bundesliga, there were no relegations due to the increase in the league for the following season . For the Oberliga 1959/60 the champions of the Landesliga Bayern EV Landsberg qualified . The ERV Ravensburg (Baden-Württemberg champions) and SG Nürnberg (Second State League Bavaria) moved up after the decision to increase the upper league had been decided.

In addition to the four teams that had not qualified for the new Bundesliga in the previous season, the TuS Eintracht Dortmund as champions of the Landesliga NRW, the Berlin ice skating club as champions of the Landesliga Berlin and the SC Ziegelwies and TEV Miesbach as champions respectively Runner-up of the Bavarian State League .

Group north

The Lower Saxony champions RESG Hanover and the NRW champions Essen RSC waived. The Hessen champions VfL Bad Nauheim Jugend were not eligible for promotion. The finals were played by the state league champions of Berlin and Hamburg:

Baden did not provide any participant; the final was played by the champions of the Bavarian and Württemberg regional leagues:

Landsberg was confirmed as a climber in the league. After the decision to increase the number, Brandenburg-Preussen Berlin decided not to move up. As a result, the EV Ravensburg and the second in the Landesliga Bayern SG Nürnberg rose.
