The 2013/14 season was the first season of the second highest German ice hockey league under the name DEL2 . It began on September 13, 2013 and ended on April 21, 2014. There were 12 clubs in the league. The DEL2 championship was won by the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven with a 4-1 victory in the play-off final against the Bietigheim Steelers . In the league relegation, the ice pirates Crimmitschau and the ESV Kaufbeuren secured relegation, while the Kassel Huskies and the Löwen Frankfurt rose from the ice hockey league.
prehistory
On November 28, 2012, the ESBG terminated the cooperation agreement with the DEB at the end of the season and the cooperation agreement with the regional associations with immediate effect. The goal was to sign a new cooperation agreement for the 2013/2014 season. On February 19, 2013, the head of the LEV North Rhine-Westphalia, Markus Schweer, announced, due to the termination of the cooperation agreement between the ESBG and the state ice sports associations, not to give permission to any western club as champions of the league.
On April 18, 2013, the DEB offered the second division side a game under its roof from the coming season and announced that it would not conclude a new cooperation agreement with the ESBG. He gave them a deadline of May 15, 2013 to report. On April 19, 2013, the second division announced that they would reject the DEB's offer and instead want to found a new DEL II without DEB participation. Only ESV Kaufbeuren and SC Riessersee announced that they would register for the DEB league. The LEV North Rhine-Westphalia sued the ESBG because they wanted to include the upper league champions Rote Teufel Bad Nauheim in their league. However, the lawsuit was dismissed. On May 2, 2013, Ernst Rupp, the manager of the Heilbronner Falken , founded the Second Ice Hockey League Betriebsgesellschaft mbH as operator of the DEL II. The DEB announced that it would declare a DEL II to be a “wild league”, whereupon the ESBG applied for an injunction submitted to the Munich Regional Court.
On May 23, 2013, it was officially confirmed that the DEL club Hannover Scorpions is withdrawing from the DEL and selling its GmbH for 1.5 million euros to the Schwenninger Wild Wings , which will be promoted back to the DEL after ten years of being second. Meanwhile, the Dresdner Eislöwen threatened bankruptcy. However, the Dresden city council decided to defer claims of 472,000 euros, which saved the ice lions.
The oral hearing on the temporary injunction, originally scheduled for July 4th, was rescheduled by the Munich Regional Court to July 18th, 2013; The ESBG shareholders' meeting scheduled for July 1, 2013 was also postponed.
On July 17, 2013, the DEB and the clubs of the second division reached an out-of-court settlement before the court hearing on July 18, 2013. ESBG will continue to play the second Bundesliga until 2018, although it will manage itself in the future. A corresponding cooperation agreement is to be concluded between DEB and ESBG.

Intermediate round
Due to the small number of participating teams, an intermediate round was introduced once for this season. From February 7th to March 9th 2014, the teams that were on the even or odd places after the main round played a single round among themselves. The goals and points achieved have been added to the main round table.

Play-offs
mode
The eight winners played from March 12 to April 21 in three rounds in best-of-seven mode. The wrong wording of the implementation regulations, which guaranteed the home rights to the four best teams in the main round, caused a stir. The EV Landshut, who was fourth after the main round, only finished fifth after the intermediate round, but waived the enforcement of the rule.
If games ended in a draw after the regular playing time of 3 × 20 minutes, there was an extension of 20 minutes with four against four field players, but only until a goal was scored. The team that scores the goal is the winner with the corresponding result. If no goal had been scored in extra time, a penalty shoot-out would have taken place immediately and without changing sides, with the exception of the last game of a play-off series. This would have been extended by 20 minutes each time until a goal was scored. In all games, the ice surface would have been "peeled dry" before the start of the penalty shootout.
Play-off tree
In each round, the remaining best of the main round competed against the remaining worst placed in the main round and the remaining second best against the remaining second worst of the main round (etc.). The main round also included the results of the intermediate round.
Play-off quarter-finals
The play-off quarter-finals were played in best of seven mode and took place on March 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23 and 25, 2014.
