For the first time in the 1973/74 season, the second highest division was named 2. Bundesliga. From 1973 to 1983 the 2nd Bundesliga was played on a single track. In the 1981/82 season, a preliminary round in the groups North and South and a nationwide final were played for the first time. From the 1983/84 season the 2nd Bundesliga was divided into north and south, with the best teams in each group playing a relegation round with the last of the Bundesliga. From the 1990/91 season there was a joint final of the 2nd Bundesliga with a direct climber, but again a single-track league in 1992/93.

The large number of bankruptcies in the second division was one reason for the abolition of the 2nd Bundesliga in 1994 and the introduction of the German Ice Hockey League with 18 teams, but without promotion and relegation. As the highest league below the DEL, the first league was created with the seasons north and south, which played off the amateur champions.

After the DEL had separated completely from the DEB association in 1997, the latter decided to organize its own Germany-wide professional league under the name of the Bundesliga from 1998 . As early as the 1997/98 season , the first division played a joint final. For the 1998/1999 Bundesliga season , the DEB President and former coach of the Düsseldorfer EG , Rainer Gossmann, was able to win over the best teams in the first division as well as the Düsseldorfer EG, which had withdrawn from the DEL. The masters were the mosquitoes eating, which rose to the DEL in the following season.

For the 1999/2000 season , the league was renamed the 2nd Bundesliga after an agreement with the DEL , the DEL subsequently used the name DEL - The 1st Bundesliga . As in the previous year, the league started with 16 teams, after a single round the best teams played the second division champions in championship round and play-offs, the remaining teams played in relegation rounds with the best teams in the major league .

After several club bankruptcies during the 2000/01 season , the 2nd Bundesliga was reduced to twelve teams. Later, the league's target number was set to 14 teams. The clubs completed a double round. The first eight played in the subsequent play-offs from the champions who could apply for the DEL. In the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons , so-called pre-play-offs were held upstream, in which the teams in places 7-10 played two play-off participants in a best-of-three procedure. The last four teams played the relegated teams in play-downs .

For the 2002/03 season , the organization of the 2nd Bundesliga was outsourced from the German Ice Hockey Federation to the ESBG . Since then, most of the teams in the 2nd Bundesliga have been organized by corporations , as in the DEL . The ESBG carried out the licensing of the clubs. The license remained with the respective parent club. Despite the financial audit, there were repeated bankruptcies and license denials:

A general sponsor was found for the 2006/07 season and the league was officially renamed the ASSTEL Ice Hockey League. The contract was terminated after just one season. Since the 2007/08 season, the games of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey have been shown on nationwide free TV . The DSF was until the end of the 2009/10 season, every Saturday morning a half-hour magazine program about the top games of the Friday match day. This magazine was discontinued for the 2010/11 season because the clubs no longer wanted to participate in the financing.

The relationships between DEL, DEB and ESBG were regulated in a cooperation agreement. The short-term introduction of a relegation with the last of the DEL 2009 was rejected by the ESBG, as the relegation was not possible due to the "existing structures and requirements for the game operation in the 2nd and upper leagues". In 2011 a new cooperation agreement was negotiated between the DEB and the DEL, which the ESBG did not join. The reason was the unacceptable conditions from the point of view of the ESBG, especially for the planned relegation. A sporting promotion from the 2nd Bundesliga to the DEL was no longer possible.

As a result, there were disputes between the DEB and the second division, which culminated in the fact that the second division denied the DEB the voting rights in the ESBG, which the DEB held in trust for the upper divisions, which no longer belong to the ESBG. In November 2012, the ESBG terminated its cooperation agreement with the DEB and its state ice sports associations. Finally, on April 18, 2013, the second division team decided to found their own gaming operating company and to cooperate closely with the DEL. The DEB announced that it would declare this new foundation a "wild league". On July 17, 2013, the DEB and the second division team reached an agreement, one day before an application for an injunction by the ESBG could be heard in court. The ESBG will initially continue to play the second division until 2018, but will be managed by the second division clubs themselves. The second division has been called DEL2 since the 2013/14 season .
