Season 2018/19 | 13th place / PD relegation |
The EHC Freiburg is a German ice hockey club from Freiburg im Breisgau . In the 2002/03 season the EHC Freiburg eV professional team was outsourced to Die Wölfe Eishockeyveranstaltungs GmbH . For the 2006/07 season , the professional team was again included in the EHC Freiburg eV, as the Wölfe Eishockeyveranstaltungs GmbH had to file for bankruptcy due to the relegation to the upper league and the lack of income from ticket sales .
From the 2007/08 season , the professional department was again outsourced from the parent club. A new GmbH around the forwarding agent Holger Döpke has led the professional team since then. As of December 28, 2010, the GmbH consisted of only two shareholders. Holger Döpke transferred his shares to the other shareholders Willi Zimber and Andrea Wurster, who together with manager Robert Vozar continued to manage the company. At the end of the 2010/11 season, the Wolves had to go into bankruptcy again, which is why the first team in 2011 was again taken over by EHC Freiburg eV.
history
The ice hockey and roller sports club Freiburg was founded on January 30, 1961 and moved up to higher class ice hockey for the first time in 1971 when the Regionalliga Süd-West was created. However, after just one season, the ERC withdrew the team. In 1973 the team rose to the top division . In 1977 the club won the league's championship and qualified for the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , in 1979 the ERC was promoted to the ice hockey Bundesliga . In the following years, the team commuted between the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga, where they were champions of the 2nd Bundesliga in 1981 and 1983. In 1984, however, the club had to file for bankruptcy due to ongoing financial difficulties.
The EHC Freiburg was founded on September 6, 1984 as the successor to the ERC and began playing on September 27, 1985 for the 1985/86 season with the first team in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga south. In the season 1987/88 he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga . This class could be held until the 1992/93 season.
On June 5, 1993 the license for the 1st Bundesliga was withdrawn from the EHC Freiburg, so that the club had to compete in the Regionalliga Süd in the following season 1993/94 . When the leagues were reorganized with the introduction of the DEL in 1994, the EHC was divided into the 2nd division, the 1st League South . The team became champions of the first division in 1995, but waived a possible move up in the DEL as the successor to the Maddogs Munich . Until the 2002/03 season , the EHC remained second class.
On April 23, 2003, the SC Riessersee was defeated in the final of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , whereupon the Freiburg wolves rose as champions in the top German division, the DEL. In the 2003/04 season , however, the team was last in the preliminary round and had to relegate back to the 2nd Bundesliga after defeats in the playdowns against the Hanover Scorpions . In 2005 , relegation was achieved in the 2nd Bundesliga via the relegation round and after missing the play-offs again in the following season , the EHC, which had meanwhile outsourced the game operations to Wölfe Freiburg GmbH, had to relegate to the top division.
Due to the resulting insolvency of Wölfe Freiburg GmbH, the goal of the season was reaching the play-offs. In the 2007/08 season , the Wolves had set themselves the goal of returning to the 2nd Bundesliga, but failed in the play-off semifinals with 0: 4 wins at EC Bad Tölz . However, since the Kassel Huskies were able to qualify for the DEL, the Breisgauers took the place of the Hessians in the 2nd Bundesliga as successors. In the 2008/09 season , the pre-play-offs were reached.
Due to renovation work on the Franz-Siegel-Halle at the beginning of the 2009/10 season , a temporary move to a foreign ice rink would have been necessary. The resulting additional costs were not included in the association's budget, so the survival of the wolves was initially endangered. In June 2009, however, the city agreed to hand over the hall in an operational state on September 27, 2009, or to pay for the additional costs incurred for possible home games in foreign venues. The wolves, however, agreed with the ice hockey game operating company responsible for the second division that the to postpone home games scheduled before September 27th until after completion.
The 2009/10 season was less successful than the previous one. The main round and the play-downs ended in last place, which sealed the sporting descent. Thanks to the withdrawal of SC Riessersee , Freiburg was allowed to compete in the 2nd Bundesliga again in the 2010/11 season . The season got off to a very good start, with the Wolves beating arch rivals Schwenninger Wild Wings 4: 3 at home on matchday one . In the course of the season, however, they hiked through a valley bottom and at the end of the main round, the wolves had to file for bankruptcy. Despite the eleventh place at the end of the main round, the wolves fell again in the subsequent play-downs. Shortly before the last play-down game, the insolvency administrator announced on April 14, 2011 that Wölfe GmbH with 390,000 euros in debt could not be saved and that the ESBG license would be revoked on April 18, 2011. The bankruptcy proceedings began on May 1st. Since the parent club EHC Freiburg still belonged to the Regionalliga Süd-West , this team now acted as the first team. On March 30, 2012, Freiburg won the second game of the play-off final against the Stuttgart EC with 8: 5, after they had won the first game with 5: 1. With this, the EHC Freiburg rose again to the top ice hockey league . There, the EHC took sixth place in the 2012/13 season . In the qualifying play-offs for the promotion round, the team lost 3: 4 against the Tölzer Löwen and thus did not qualify for the promotion round.
The 2013/14 season ended in second place in the Oberliga Süd. In the play-offs, one of the two places for the qualifying round for the DEL2 was won. There the team reached fifth place and did not rise. In the following season 2014/15 , the EHC was first placed in the Oberliga Süd and secured a place in the play-offs for the promotion play-offs to DEL2 . They made it to the final, ultimately winning it 3-2 after games against Füchse Duisburg and thus becoming German league champions in 2014/15. As a result of the promotion you have been competing in the DEL2 since the 2015/16 season . After a strong start to the season with two wins, the team got into the lower part of the table through a long series of winless games. The 13th of the main round went to EHC Freiburg in the play-downs against ESV Kaufbeuren . In the "best-of-seven" round, both teams won their home games, so the winner had to be determined in the seventh game in Kaufbeuren. The Freiburg team decided this game 6-4 for themselves. With this only away win in the play-down round, the EHC secured relegation in the DEL2. In the 2016/17 season , the Wolves surprisingly finished 7th in the table at the end of the main round and thus qualified for the pre-play-offs. There you could prevail in three games against the favorite tower stars from Ravensburg , who had occupied 10th place in the final table. Finally, the EHC failed in the first play-off round at the eventual champions Löwen Frankfurt . The EHC finished the main round of the 2017/18 DEL2 season as twelfth in the table and therefore had to go into the playdowns. In these, the Freiburg team prevailed in round 1 with 4: 3 games against the Tölzer Löwen and thus managed to stay in the league. In the following season , the club had to go back to the play-downs as thirteenth in the table, losing to the Tölzer Löwen 3: 4 games in the first round - including the longest in the club's history with 107: 48 minutes - but retained in the second round against the Deggendorfer SC with 4: 3 games the upper hand.
From 2014 to 2018 the Schwenninger Wild Wings were the cooperation partner of the EHC Freiburg. There has been a cooperation with EV Lindau since 2019 .
