The ice hockey major league was played in a different mode in the 2007/08 season in contrast to the previous season.

mode

The mode was set for the preliminary round

• the 19 participating teams are divided into a 9-team northern group and a 10-team southern group;
• first a single round (return leg) of all participating teams played; then an additional double round is played within the two groups;
• A separate table is kept for each group due to the different number of participants.

After the preliminary round

• the participants in places 1 to 4 of each group take part in the promotion playoffs to the 2nd Bundesliga;
• the participants in positions 7 to 10 of the preliminary round group south in the relegation round south and 6 to 9 of the preliminary round group north in the relegation round north each play a relegated athlete in the respective national association;
• the season is over for the participants in places 5 and 6 of the preliminary round group south and the participants in place 5 in the preliminary round group north.

Rules changes from this season

• When games are extended - as in the DEL and the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey - only 4 instead of 5 field players may be used by both teams.
• In the last possible games within a playoff series, the penalty shoot-out does not apply and the game continues until the next hit has been decided.
• Holders of sponsorship licenses for DEL teams must have played at least 10 games for a team by January 31, 2008 in order to continue to be eligible to play for them.
• Players from 2nd Bundesliga teams can also have a promotion license for a top division team .
• An unlimited number of players with a foreign player license can be required until the end of the transfer on January 31, 2008 - a maximum of 5 players can be used per game.
• A restriction was introduced per game that a maximum of 15 players may be used who were either born as field players with a German player license before January 1, 1986 or are players with a foreign player license (so-called U21 rule).

Clubs of the ice hockey league of the 2007/08 season with preliminary round groups North ( ) and South ( )

In the preliminary round group North, the top division of the previous year Eisbären Juniors Berlin , Hanover Indians and Blue Devils Weiden are joined by the Dresdner Eislöwen as the relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, from the Regionalliga Hessen the Nord-Ost the Rote Teufel Bad Nauheim and from the Regionalliga Nord -East the teams: Black Dragons Erfurt , Saale Bulls Halle , Blue Lions Leipzig and Rostock Piranhas .

In the southern group, in addition to last year's top division team Tölzer Löwen , Wölfe Freiburg (for EHC Freiburg), EV Füssen Leopards , EHC Klostersee , TEV Miesbach , EC Peiting , Starbulls Rosenheim , the relegated Bundesliga club ESV Kaufbeuren and the Bavarian ice hockey league, the promoted players Deggendorf Fire and EHF Passau Black Hawks .

Promotion to the top division

The regulation as to which team from the top divisions of the regional associations can be promoted to the Oberliga 2008/09 is made independently by them:

A team from Bavaria , the Regionalliga Nord-Ost one team and the joint promotion round of the Regionalliga North Rhine-Westphalia, Regionalliga Hessen and the Baden-Württemberg League can receive approval from a maximum of two teams.

• The teams of places 1–4 of the preliminary round take part in the promotion playoffs.
• The team in 5th place in the preliminary round is athletically qualified for the ice hockey league 2008/09 .
• The teams of places 6-9 of the preliminary round take part in the relegation round north.

The Dresdner Eislöwen and the Tölzer Löwen are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga 2008/09. The Wölfe Freiburg move up for the DEL-climber Kassel Huskies in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The TEV Miesbach was athletically qualified for the Oberliga 2008/09. The EHF Passau Black Hawks was relegated to the BEL 2008/09 , but was able to remain in the Oberliga due to the advancement of the Wölfe Freiburg to the 2nd Bundesliga.
