The ice hockey league was carried out in the form of a group south with 16 participants and a group north with 10 participants.

In the Oberliga Nord the preliminary round was carried out as a double round and in the Oberliga Süd as a single round.

After the preliminary round, the best eight teams from the South group took part in the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga South 1988/89 and the best six from the North group took part in the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga North 1988/89 , while the other teams took part in the Qualifying rounds with the participants from the regional leagues participated.

ERC Sonthofen became German league champions in 1987/88 after two victories against ERC Westphalia Dortmund .

The ERSC Karben went bankrupt after the season, the Herford EG withdrew to the national league and started again as Herford EC. The REV Bremerhaven was a successor in the Oberliga Nord.

Preliminary round

The teams in places 1-8 of the preliminary round took part in the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga South in 1988/89 . The other teams played the Oberliga qualification with the teams from the Regionalliga Süd and Süd-West .

Playoffs

In order to qualify possible successors for the Oberliga Süd athletically, playoffs between groups A and B were played. The EV Pfronten prevailed in the series for 7th place and remained in the top division, while the TSV 1862 Erding , EA Kempten , EA Schongau and EV Regensburg were relegated.
