The ice hockey league was carried out as in the previous season in the form of a group south and a group north / west. Eintracht Frankfurt won the championship title of the Oberliga and rose as a successor to the 2nd Bundesliga due to the waiver of ESG Kassel and Herner EV .

In the north / west group , a preliminary round with 11 teams was carried out as a single round and then a final round of the best six teams. The best four of the final round took part in the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga North after their round, which was also played as a single round .

In contrast, after the preliminary round in the south group , which was also played as a single round , in which 15 teams took part, the top 3 teams took part in the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga south .

The finals for the Oberliga championship were played on March 27 and 28, 1982. The Eintracht Frankfurt prevailed with two wins against the EC Peiting and thus won the championship title.
