The Herne EV 2007 is an ice hockey club in Herne that has been competing in the major league with its first team since 2013 . It is considered to be one of the traditional ice hockey clubs in the Ruhr area.

history

The history of ice hockey in Herne begins with the Herner EV , which was founded on July 13, 1970. Later, in addition to the HEV, there was also the ESG Herne , which was renamed Herner EG Blizzards after the end of the HEV . In addition to the Herner EG, the Herner EV was founded in the summer of 2007 after the HEV had been deleted from the club register , and has been the only club to have participated in gaming since 2008.

Herner EV

When it became clear in 1969 that an ice rink should be built in the Revierpark, the founding members decided to found the Herner Ice Sports Club. The sporting variants that the then young club should offer the region were ice hockey, curling, figure skating and speed skating. The club colors were chosen based on the city of Herne, which at that time still had the colors green-white-red in its city arms. For the first time in the higher-class league ice hockey, the Herner EV appeared in the 1972/73 season in the Regionalliga, where the team automatically moved up to the Oberliga Nord 1973/74 with the introduction of the old 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga and held the class for the next few years. For the 1979/80 season , the club rose to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga.

After the 1980/81 season , the club would have been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, but the end of the game at SG Nürnberg , the team remained in the league and then relegated to the Oberliga Nord in the following season . For the 1983/84 season , the coach Richard Piechutta was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. After the 1987/88 season , the club was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga and withdrew to a lower division.

It was not until the 1991/92 season that the club managed to return to the Oberliga Nord . When the teams were reassigned in the summer of 1994 with the introduction of the German Ice Hockey League , the Herner EV was divided into the - at that time second class - 1st League North . The Herner EV remained in this division until the re-introduction of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga in summer 1998.

Herner EV and ESG Herne

Before the 1999/2000 season, members of the HEV, whose first team had played as Herne Miners since the 1996/97 season , separated from the club and founded the ESG Herne '(' Eissportgemeinschaft Herne ') with the nickname Twister , so that two clubs in Herne existed with teams in league play operations. For the 1999/2000 season , the Herner Miners succeeded in returning to the Oberliga Nord, but the team rose again after the season. In the same season, the Herner Twister took part in the - at that time fifth class - Landesliga NRW.

In the 2000/01 season, the Herner Miners took part in the Regionalliga NRW , but were withdrawn in February 2001 - after financial problems - like the other teams that were still playing under the name HEV. The Herner Twister were champions of the Landesliga NRW this season and were promoted to the Regionalliga NRW. After the HEV withdrew from gaming operations, the members of this association joined the ESG. The ESG Herne then renamed itself to Herner EG Blizzards . The insolvency proceedings, which were concluded in summer 2006, were then opened via the HEV.

Herner EG Blizzards

Under the name Herner Blizzards, the first team took part in the - fourth class - Regionalliga NRW since the 2001/02 season. When the Oberliga Nord was reintroduced in the third league for the 2004/05 season , the HEG - just like the Ratinger Ice Aliens - showed interest in promotion to this league, but this was not feasible due to the non-approval by the State Ice Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia. In November 2004, HEG filed for insolvency and the 2005/06 season in the Regionalliga NRW could be carried out with the consent of the preliminary insolvency administrator.

They only just missed promotion to the league against Neusser EV , where in the decisive final home game of the season in the defeat against Neuss with around 3,500 spectators, the highest number of spectators at a home game this season was achieved. A season later (2006/07) they managed with a series of 44 victories in a row in addition to the championship in the Regionalliga NRW and first place in the promotion round to the upper league, which in front of an average of about 600-1000 spectators - with attractive opponents also clearly more took place.

The play-offs ended without a defeat, where in the last final game of RT Bad Nauheim was defeated 6: 3 in front of 4007 spectators, the athletic promotion to the league succeeded. Organizationally, the first team was outsourced to a newly founded limited company from January 2007 . The completion of the ongoing insolvency proceedings for the club, which was required as one of the prerequisites for the league license, was not carried out by April 30, 2007, so that the HEG had to continue to participate in the Regionalliga NRW.

Herner EV 2007

In the summer of 2007, in addition to the HEG, the Herner Eissportverein 2007 was founded. In contrast to the HEG, the club, which was not financially burdened, first took over the game operations of the 2nd team, the youngsters and the women's team of the HEG. Because the HEG only had the right to participate in the - fourth-rate - Regionalliga NRW 2007/08 for the first team, the first team entered as a syndicate from both clubs - outsourced to a new GmbH. Instead, the HEG should not be kept alive after the final conclusion of the bankruptcy proceedings.

In 2007, the club managed to qualify for the major league immediately in its first season. The team defeated their rivals from Dortmund in the shoot-out in the play-off final . After a rather disappointing main round, the team was able to improve more and more and prevailed in the promotion round against the other teams of the Regionalliga West and the Regionalliga Hessen as well as the Regionalliga Baden-Württemberg. In the following months it was not clear for a long time whether the rise would be financially feasible.

Finally, the patron of the former DEL Club Füchse Duisburg , Ralf Pape, decided to join Herner EV 2007 as the majority shareholder. He also took over the ice rink, which was extensively renovated by the 2008/09 season . The plan was to establish the association as a kind of "training place" for young talents. In addition to the Füchsen from Duisburg, the other DEL clubs from NRW also took part in the project. Thus, the first senior team since the season from 2008 to 2011 took part in the league game.

After the 2010/2011 season, the Pape Group stopped its involvement in Herne ice hockey. One of the consequences of this was that the operating company of the Herne ice rink, which belongs to the Pape Group, filed for bankruptcy, which seriously jeopardized the continued existence of the Herne ice hockey location. For the 2011/2012 season, the Herner EV was able to agree at the last minute on a lease with the insolvency administrator, which was limited to the end of the season (spring 2012). This season, however, the Herner EV did not play in the third-class Oberliga West, but in the fourth-class Regional League West, despite athletic qualifications. On April 1, 2012, the ice rink became the club's own ice rink, which was purchased and paid for. In the 2012/13 season, the Herner EV managed to move into the play-offs unbeaten and finished the cup round with only one defeat in first place. Since 2013, the Herner EV has been back in the top division.

Gysenberghalle / Hannibal Arena

When the construction of an ice rink in the Revierpark in Herne began in 1969, it was financed and built by IBACO Sportstätten GmbH from Velbert. Unfortunately, the opening of the ice rink was delayed and the calculated costs could not be met. From initially calculated 3.5 million to 5.5 million and finally to 7.3 million marks. In the mid-80s, IBACO Sportstätten GmbH was threatened with bankruptcy so that the KVR municipal association and the city of Herne took over the property and bought it for 4.6 million marks. In this context, it was decided to invest another 2.3 million marks in the ice rink. The seating capacity was increased from 1,000 to 1,600 and the second smaller ice surface was removed. Instead, new rooms were built for solarium and fitness areas and squash. But three years later, the hoped-for success did not materialize and they remained 50% behind the hoped-for possibilities. In 1997 the subsidies from the tax money of the district government in Arnsberg were too much and so alternatives had to be created. At the end of 1998 it was clear that a duo of entrepreneurs would win the bid for 2 million marks. According to the two operators, 500,000 marks were invested in the ice rink. After 10 years, Unternehmer-Dou sold the ice rink to another private entrepreneur. According to its own information, this invested around 1.5–2 million euros from August 2008 to 2011. In 2011, the entrepreneur took appropriate decisions from his commitment and withdrew. From then on, the Gysenberghalle was managed by an insolvency administrator; various usage models were presented in addition to its use as an ice rink, which could be thrown out with many protests and contradictions. So, in the proverbial last second, the remaining one was decided as an ice rink, which is currently run by a number of shareholders with association ties and is now one of the few club-owned ice rinks in Germany. The Hannibal shopping center in Bochum has been the official name sponsor of the Gysenberghalle since June 1, 2018. The sponsorship agreement has a term of ten years.
