The Regionalliga 1972/73 was the eighth and final season of the third highest German ice hockey league under this name. After this season, the 2nd Bundesliga was introduced as the second division and the interested teams of the regional league were accepted into the now third-class league. The VER Selb became the regional league champion .

The league was played in two regional groups, North and South. The group south-west of the previous two seasons, however, had been dissolved after two of the five teams had been promoted to the league and two teams had withdrawn.

The group south played a single round followed by an intermediate round of the first four or the remaining three teams. The points from the preliminary round were carried over to the intermediate round. The two best teams in the upper intermediate round qualified for the finals.

The group north played a single round, the two best teams qualified for the finals.

Since the 2nd ice hockey league was introduced as the second highest game fund for the 1973/74 season , all regional league teams were included in the now third-class ice hockey league 1973/74 . The Regionalliga Süd was canceled for the 1973/74 season, the North group was newly formed.

Attendees

All 1b representations no longer took part ( Krefelder EV , Berliner Schlittschuhclub (both group north), VfL Bad Nauheim (south-west), EV Landshut and Augsburger EV (both south)). In addition, Altonaer SV (North) and Zweibrücker EG (South-West) withdrew from the league. The group south-west was disbanded. The last remaining team of the group south-west VERC Lauterbach was divided into the group north. On the other hand, the newly registered ERC Ludwigshafen for the south-west group withdrew after being assigned to the south group. Bayern league champions Münchener EV and TSV Peiting were new in the group south. Three teams from cities in North Rhine-Westphalia whose artificial ice stadiums had opened in the last two years registered for the Northern group.
