The 1995/96 season of the 2nd ice hockey league was the second season of the new third-highest German ice hockey league . After EV Dingolfing was forced to relegate to the Bavarian regional league, the ERC Haßfurt Sharks replaced the wanderers Germering, who had been promoted to athletes, SG Wernau / Esslingen . In the Northern group, the teams from ESV Bitburg , EC Eschweiler and SC Solingen 88 withdrew from play before the start of the season and were replaced by the Königsborner EC , the Adendorfer EC and the Herford EC .

The master Limburger EG failed at the end of the season in the promotion round to the first division , instead the REV Bremerhaven , the Grefrather EV and the Königsborner EC in the north as well as the EV Ravensburg , the ERC Sonthofen and the ERC Ingolstadt in the group south qualified for the second highest League. The regional league teams ESC Dorfen , Schwenninger ERC Amateure , Braunlager EHC / Harz , Berlin Ice Skating Club and Gelsenkirchener EC qualified for the 2nd division . On the other hand, EA Schongau and ERC Haßfurt Sharks got out of the 2nd division .

Group south

In the south group , a main round with 16 participants was first played in the form of a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. At the end of the main round, the participants in places 1 to 10 took part in the promotion round to the 1st League South , which was played in two groups. The other teams had to play in a relegation round to avoid relegation.

Group north

In the 2nd division north , a preliminary round was played out in three regional subgroups, the north group , the west group and the south-west group as a single round. The points were finally carried over to the main round. This was also played as a single round with all 12 teams. At the end of the main round, the participants in 1st place with 8th should have taken part in the promotion round to the 1st League North . Since the EC Wolfsburg stopped playing in the first division, the ninth-placed VERC Lauterbach also moved into the promotion round.

The other teams in Group North took part in six regional league teams in the promotion round to the 2nd Northern League, which was carried out for the first time in the form of a promotion round with subsequent play-offs .

The top two of the group in the group North and South also contested the final for the championship of the 2nd division.
