The Grefrather EC had waived participation in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord.

Oberliga Mitte

  • Originally, the two best teams from the Baden-Württemberg regional association were supposed to take part in the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga South 1987/88 and the two best teams from the Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate regional associations in the qualification for the 2nd Bundesliga North 1987/88 . The other four teams should play with the four best teams of the Regionalliga Süd-West to stay up. It was planned to increase the league to ten teams. To this end, EV Ravensburg should switch from the Oberliga Süd to the Oberliga Mitte and another team from the Regionalliga Süd-West should move up.
  • Since the sporting discrepancy within the Oberliga Mitte was obvious, the VERC Lauterbach and ERSC Karben from Oberliga Mitte and the Ib team from Eintracht Frankfurt and EC Konstanz from the Regionalliga Süd-West signed a waiver at DEB, which meant that the planned mode threatened to turn into a farce. EV Stuttgart and Heilbronner EC played for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga South as planned, ERC Rödermark, which was financially badly hit, wanted to play in the promotion round in the north, but had to file for bankruptcy after a game and logged its team off the game. The offer of the third-placed EHC Bad Liebenzell due to its geographical location to take part in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga North instead of a representative from Hesse or Rhineland-Palatinate in order to avoid the primarily financially unattractive relegation round was rejected by the DEB.
  • At the appointment meeting in Mannheim in January 1987, it was decided that the three remaining league teams from Baden-Württemberg (EHC Bad Liebenzell, ESG Esslingen, Schwenninger ERC Ib) with the two best Baden-Württemberg teams of the Regionalliga Süd-West (EHC Freiburg Ib, ESV Hügelsheim) should play in a group and that the two teams from the state associations of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate (VERC Lauterbach, ERSC Karben) with the two best teams of the Regionalliga Süd-West from the same state associations (EC Dillingen, ESV Trier) in the second group.

  • After the season the German Ice Hockey Federation decided to dissolve the Oberliga Mitte in order to "not damage the association's reputation". While EV Stuttgart and Heilbronner EC were promoted to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga, ERSC Karben moved to the Oberliga Nord. The EHC Bad Liebenzell went bankrupt. The other clubs played in the newly founded Regionalliga Mitte (VERC Lauterbach) or the Regionalliga Süd-West (Schwenninger ERC Ib, ESG Esslingen).
